Añadir al carrito[Philadelphia: Printed by Ketterlinus, circa 1922.] Unpaginated. [16 pages]. Illustrated from photos throughout. Original self wraps, stitched with string as issued. 14 x 10 cm. Some light soiling and toning to wraps, still about very good. An early brochure for this acclaimed North Carolina resort. The Grove Park Inn opened in 1913. This pamphlet includes a photo and description of the golf course and club house at the Biltmore Forest Country Club. The course was designed by Donald Ross and completed in 1922. On the rear wrap is a piece on "Our New Organ," being a pipe organ built by Ernest M. Skinner of Boston, which was installed in 1919. This is signed (in type) by F.L.S. This was Fred Loring Seely, the builder of the Grove Park Inn and its manager from the day it opened until 1927. In addition to a description of the Grove Park's accomodations and amenities, the pamphlet discusses the handicraft work of Biltmore Industries, purchased from the Vanderbilts and greatly expanded by Seely in 1917. Visitors to the Inn were invited to tour the shops which produced homespun cloth and wood-carving. Not in Thornton (locating two other early Grove Park pamphlets).

Añadir al carrito21.5x29.5 cm (8 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches), 20 plates with chromolithograph illustrations, plus cover illustrations and four supplemental views, original pictorial linen-backed chromolithograph wrappers, string tied. First edition. Part one (apparently all published) plus four additional plates designated "San Francisco Examiner Art Supplement." Charles Graham was "Director of Color of the California Midwinter Fair." Some of the color lithographs have the imprint "The Winters Art Litho. Co., Chicago." Charles Graham (1852-1911) was a self-taught itinerant artist who worked for HARPER'S WEEKLY and other national magazines in the 1870s and 1880s. He had studios in San Francisco at various times between 1883 and 1896. He was director of color at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, and served in the same capacity the following year at the California Midwinter Fair where he also illustrated the souvenir guides. See Hughes, Artists in California 1786-1940, p. 182. The California Midwinter Fair, held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, was extremely successful: it made money while promoting winter travel to the Golden State. "The California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 was the state's first international event and as such, was a landmark in her history. Purposely held in winter, it showcased the the glorious climate of the Golden State and followed on the heels of the vastly successful World's Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in 1893 . The fair did much to attract visitors to California . The Midwinter Fair was extremely successful and had a lasting impact not only in San Francisco but also in the state's southern realm . San Francisco was host to another international event two decades after the Midwinter Fair: in 1914, one of the most important events in California history took place there -- the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Although the PPIE was larger and grander that its predecessor, its heritage may be traced to the pioneering Midwinter Fair of 1894" (Victoria Dailey, California's First International Exposition: The Midwinter Fair of 1894). Not in Cowan (1933; 1964) or Rocq (1970). String tie is missing. With the exception of tiny nicks in two margins and mild tanning to two margins, the twenty plates in the main portfolio are in fine condition. The inner surface of the covers is a bit foxed. Creases and short tears in the margins of two supplemental plates have been professionally mended. An excellent copy overall. Quite scarce; seldom found with the supplemental plates. (#167662).

Illustrated with 8 full-page lithographed color plates by Dickman-Jones Co. of San Francisco, plus the full set of 24 full-page lithographed color plates by H. S. Crocker Co. plus over 213 full-page black & white photographs with extensive descriptive text, including 13 (of 14) double-page panoramas. Publisher's binding of three-quarter brown morocco, darker cloth sides, gilt lettering and pictorial element on cloth cover, gilt-lettered spine. Outer hinges and spine ends rubbed, 3 corners show light wear. A fine, clean copy. First edition. With the bookplate of Thomas Wayne Norris and included in the famous Norris Catalogue. An incredibly scarce tile, with the full complement of 24 full-page color lithographs (Series I & II) of scenes and buildings at the Midwinter Fair, also issued by H. S. Crocker Co., and the addition of the souvenir grouping, Glimpses of the Midwinter Fair, issued by Dickman-Jones Co. to their customers, with 8 full-page color lithographs of the Fair (bound in with its original wrappers). Sunset City and Sunset Scenes is usually found only with the Taber black & white reproductions. We have never had a copy bound with the full series of color lithographs although over the years we've seen a few odd plates. The large number of black and white photographic reproductions include a number of views of the buildings and grounds of the Midwinter Fair held in Golden Gate Park; they are interspersed with select views of the natural wonders of the State. Nearly all the photographs are by Isaiah W. Taber, official photographer of the Fair. The text for the non-Fair images was written by J. M. Hutchings; the twenty-four lithographs issued by Crocker were drawn by the famous western artist, H. W. Hansen. [Norris, Norris Catalogue (this copy): 3493; Rocq, Glimpses of the Midwinter Fair: 11355; Rocq, Sunset City: 11359; no Auction Records that include the color plates]. Book.
