Añadir al carrito[2], 5-212 pages. Hardcover: H 13cm x L 8.5cm. Original calf leather spine with gilt stamped horizontal bars; spine ends chipped with slender 3cm surface loss below front joint center; original tan paper over boards with some edge losses, soiling, and severe rubbing so that the publisher's printing is now difficult to discern; board edges worn particularly at corners. Two ink ownership signatures of Georgia P. Butt at top of front free endpaper dated for 1848 and 1853 with "Wynnton, Georgia" noted at page bottom; yet another Butt pencil inscription upon title page with pencil notations by a similar hand on rear flyleaf verso. Page stub evident at rear so book is missing its rear free endpaper; although no page stub is evident at book's front there is only a ffep and title page immediately followed by the first text leaf numbered as pages 5-6 so perhaps it is missing a half-title. Fairly minimal foxing and toning upon interior leaves. Features "Memoir of William Cowper" on pages 5-32 which, as implied by the title, was compiled from biographical material authored by Robert Southey (1774-1843), Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), and others. Primary text features Cowper's "The Task" on pages 33-212 inclusive. OCLC cites five Uriah Hunt 1846 imprints among all member libraries although only two share this copy's pagination and dimensions with the other three only being 11cm in height and with 288 pages. Only a fair copy but still a book with an interesting Lowndes County, Mississippi and Columbus, Georgia association for Georgia Priscilla Butt (1834-1911) married Thomas Erskine Young (1831-1869) sometime in 1855. Young was an heir to one of the great planter fortunes in antebellum Mississippi via his father George Young, owner of the magnificent Waverly Plantation just north of Columbus, Mississippi atop a westbank bluff of the Tombigbee River. Serving in Company I, 43rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Thomas Young achieved the rank of captain in October 1862 and assumed command of the unit in the spring of 1863. Georgia Young stayed in Columbus, Mississippi after her husband's death in 1869. {Antiq-Shelf#1}.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [a nice-looking copy with just light shelfwear, front hinge a little weak (but not cracked), faint dust-soiling to top edge; the jacket is mildly edgeworn, with a few tiny nicks at the spine ends and single (internal) tape-reinforcement across the top of the spine]. (8 B&W film stills) Photoplay Edition, issued to coincide with the release of the 1928 Fox Film Corporation silent film directed by John Ford, a sentimental tale about a Bavarian widow and the fates of her sons -- three of whom end up fighting in the German army during World War I, while the fourth, having emigrated to New York, has become so thoroughly Americanized that he enlists in the American army, which causes his mother to be shunned in her native village. (The film was remade under the same title in 1940, keyed around the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia.) The title story on which the movie was based, "Mother Bernle Learns Her Letters," is just 61 pages long, with the remainder of the volume taken up by seven additional stories, at least one of which, "Pas de Quatre," was adapted for an episode of the 1950s TV anthology series "Rheingold Theatre," under the title "Beloved Stranger." (John Ford filmed one additional Wylie story, "Pilgrimage," in 1933.) This is, by the way, technically a true first edition, as this exact collection of Wylie's stories had not been previously published: all seven of the additional stories had appeared in the 1926 collection "The Mad Busman, and Other Stories," but for this volume the "Busman" story was swapped out for the "Mother Bernle" yarn (which had first been published in The Saturday Evening Post in 1926, under the title "Grandmother Bernle Learns Her Letters").…
