An advertising circular for Dr. Drake's (opium-based) German Croup Remedy, an elixir first made by a newspaperman, Leonard Glessner, in his home in 1889. He initially obtained the recipe from a German physician, August Drake, and incorporated in 1905 as the Glessner Medicine Co. In 1903, Glessner won a landmark legal decision af…ter a local man, also named Drake, began hawking his own cure all under the same name. Although the medicine was touted as safe and never to sicken, a Dr. J. A. Palmer wrote a letter to the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1907 reporting a case "in which death was directly attributable to "Dr Drake's Germany Cough Remedy." It was also explicitly mentioned in a Dr. Kebler's report before Congress in 1909 on medicinal preparations that contained habit-forming drugs. In alarmist languague, the recto describes the frightening onset of croup and the medicine's miraculous and instantaneous cure while the verso features from physicians and satisfied customers. Printed in blue on both sides of an 8 ¾" x 5 ¾" sheet. No date is given, but as the 'German' was dropped in 1912 in the lead-up to WWI, the flier was published sometime between 1905-1912. Some toning, but a fine copy.

Artist's engraved business card laid in with a manuscript presentation.… A wonderful and wonderfully funny hand-lettered and hand-illustrated book by Walter Jack Duncan, celebrating Charles Mac Rae's courtship of his fiancée, his dwindling days of bachelorhood, his impending marriage, and the horrifying spectre of babies, with just the right touch of sophomoric humor one would expect from a talented 21 year old in 1902. Every page is embellished or illustrated in a most pleasing manner reminiscent of W.W. Denslow. Walter Jack Duncan was a noted illustrator born in Indianapolis in 1881. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City with John H. Twachtman, and illustrated for the popular magazines of the period: *The Century Magazine*, *Scribner's*, *McClure's*, and *Harper's Monthly Magazine*. He also served as an official artist with the A.E.F. during World War I and illustrated many books, including several by Christopher Morley. A lovely production, suitable for reprinting.

He explains its great bene…fits "as an antacid, antispasmotic, and carminative, combined with a gentle stimlant tonic effect, it is peculiar for its great efficacy in dysentery, diarrhea, cholera mobus, flatulent cholic, weakness of stomach and bowels, painful menstruation, &c., &c." Directions for use, dosage, and a handful of testimonials follow (primarily from Georgia judges, bank officials and the Georgia press, all from the 1850's). In an appeal to Planters, Dr. Bliss explains that its presence in the home may "save the life of some of your family, or the life of a valuable negro." No listings found on OCLC.
