"Sixth revised edition. Rewritten and re…stereotyped, with many new illustrations" (as stated upon the title page). i-xii, 13-528 pages. Hardcover: H 19.5cm x L 12.5cm. Black leather spine with dark brown boards, a few surface scuffs to spine which retains bright gilt title lettering, some rubbing to boards with worn corners. Archival glue repair to rear hinge; binding now firm. Red edges; some creased page corners; two quires pulled; mostly mild browning or foxing to interior leaves; some moisture stains on preliminary leaves; missing rear free endpaper and perhaps a flyleaf. Black ink ownership stamps of a "Dr. Irwin" on front free endpaper and front flyleaf with pencil ownership inscription of "R.C. Irwin, Ann Arbor, Mich." on both as well; interesting explanatory paragraph in pencil on front pastedown stating that Dr. Robert Calvin Irwin was a surgeon in the Confederate Army and was killed in battle (although no date or unit is cited). Book was acquired from a Tunica, Mississippi estate with (if the paragraph's assertions are correct) a connection to Tunica plantation owner and banker Col. Robert Clell Irwin (1840-1909) whose descendants included members of the Leatherman and Abbay families who were both prominent landowners in the state's northern Delta region. With Preface, illustrations throughout, Appendix, and Index. Apparently based upon "Elements of Chemistry" by Edward Turner (1798-1837) which was first published in 1827.
