[Henry] Williams"); District of Massachusetts copyright statement on page 2; "Advertisement" (pages 3-4); "Narrative of the Life, &c. of Samuel Thomson" (pages 5-140); "Certificates and Statements, Concerning the Treatment and Cure of Disease, Under the System of Practice Discovered by Dr. Samuel Thomson" (pages 141-159); "Introduction to the New Guide to Health, or, Botanic Family Physician" (pages 161-186); brief concluding essay excoriating formal medicine "The Doctors Without a System" (pages 186-188). Self-taught American herbalist and botanist Samuel Thomson (1769-1843) earned renown in the early 19th century for his alternative system of herbal/botanic/vegetable medicine - "Thomsonian Medicine" or "Thomsonianism" - which garnered popularity in rural areas of the United States in part as rejection of what Jacksonian America saw as the elitist medical establishment but also for lack of access to the former. Thomson's herbal cures may have had some efficacy when dealing with simple illnesses but were quackery when applied to serious disease and trauma and hence Thomson is credited as providing the impetus for individual states to start regulating medical practitioners. This Columbus, Ohio Horton Howard "Fourth Edition" imprint was preceded by Boston editions published by E.G. House in 1822 and 1825 with Harvard's catalog citing an 1827 Columbus-Howard "Third Edition" (its pagination matching this fourth). An 1829 Howard edition was published in St. Clairsville, Ohio well east of Columbus near what was then Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia). Later editions were issued in both Columbus and Boston in 1832, in Columbus in 1833, and again in Boston in 1835. The Thomson-Howard connection began in 1827 when Thomson contracted Howard to be his agent in Ohio to sell the former's patent medicines and printing/retailing his book. However, Thomson revoked their deal in 1830 upon accusing Howard of not remitting all that was due. In response, Howard collaborated with Dr. William Hance in 1832 to publish the two-volume "An Improved System of Botanic Medicine, Founded Upon Correct Physiological Principles . . ." followed by later editions in 1833 and 1836. Howard and Hance included a cholera syrup within their joint monograph but, if that was the "cure" tried by Howard, it proved insufficient as the infection took his life on August 14, 1833 as well as the lives of wife Hannah Hastings Howard on August 22 and daughter Ann Howard on August 9.
