Contemporary full leather binding; boards have some patches of surface peeling and worn corners; large circular stain to front board; patches of white discoloration to rear board; slender 4cm splitting at heel of front joint with slender abrasion along upper joint; spine ends scuffed; spine's title label has surface abrasion but gilt lettering remains bright. Front endpapers toned with ffep torn along gutter; several signatures and assorted writing in ink and pencil on preliminary leaves with most boldly written being signature of J.H. McCreary on ffep; foxing throughout; some moisture stain tidelines on rear plates; tear and staining to Plate 1 which is also creased and wrinkled from not being re-inserted to its original fold lines. Binding is firm. The aforementioned ffep ink signature is likely that of James Hunter McCreary (1839-1927) of Turnbull, Monroe County, Alabama as the book was part of a small collection of mid-19th century volumes all having a McCreary family lineage.
