Book is brand new and unread. Personally hand signed by the author, Simon Shuster, directly to the full title page. NOT a tip in. NOT a bookplate. Dust jacket hand covered in protective archival grade Mylar for many worry free years of reading/collecting! INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! "Shuster crafts an intimate account of the Russian invasion, which vividly captures Zelensky's transformation from a clean-cut funnyman into a war hero out of central casting." --New York Times Book Review; Editors' Choice Selection "The Showman surpasses all similar efforts to date and is set to be the standard by which all other works on Mr. Zelensky and Ukraine's wartime politics will be judged." Wall Street Journal A monumental account of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the forging of a leader, The Showman provides an insider's perspective on the war reshaping our world, based on unprecedented access to Volodymyr Zelensky and the high command in Kyiv. Time correspondent Simon Shuster chronicles the life and leadership of Volodymyr Zelensky from the dressing rooms of his variety shows to the muddy trenches of Ukraine's war with Russia. Based on four years of reporting; extensive travels with President Zelensky to the front; and dozens of interviews with him, his wife, his friends and enemies, his advisers, ministers and military commanders, Shuster tells the intimate and revealing story of the president's evolution from a slapstick actor to a symbol of resilience. In their most candid accounts of the war so far, members of Zelensky's inner circle show how the president's character changed under the strains of leadership and the horrors he witnessed each day. His wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska, describes her escape from Kyiv with their children, her life on the run, and the tensions that emerged in her marriage as she struggled to return to a meaningful role in the administration. Ukraine's top military commander, General Valery Zaluzhny, shares the untold story of his fraught relationship with the president and the subsequent consequences. Reflecting on their own regrets and critical decisions, Zelensky and his senior aides open up about the causes of the Russian invasion and how it may have been avoided. They describe with astonishing frankness how their peace talks with Vladimir Putin fell apart and how their faith in the U.S. faltered, both under Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The Showman provides the first inside account of Zelensky's life amid the invasion, offering a clear-eyed view of his failures to prepare for it and his willingness to silence dissent under martial law. What emerges is a complex picture of a man struggling to break what he sees as a historical cycle of oppression that began generations before he was born. Even as the war drags on, Zelensky lays out his vision for its future course and, through his actions, demonstrates his strategy for countering the Russians and keeping the West on his side. The Showman, as a work of eyewitness journalism, provides an essential perspective on the war defining our age, resulting in a riveting, vivid portrait of the invasion as experienced by its number one target and improbable hero. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Small 4to. Rebound in brown cloth, with original blind-embossed front/rear board cloth and spine (with gilt lettering) remounted. 71pp, 255pp, (1p). Very good. Original remounted binding a bit rubbed; text block tight and bright. Attractively rebound in matching brown with original brown cloth remounted, the first part of this Senate report of the 1st Session of the 36th Congress ("Rep. Com. No. 278") consists of "The Select Committee of the Senate appointed to inquire into the late invasion and seizure of the public property at Harper's Ferry" and is dated 14 December 1859. This copy has been extra-illustrated, for tipped in facing the first text page is an exceptional half-length steel-engraved portrait of an intense-looking Brown in full beard and three-piece suit, facsimile signature beneath; though undated, it is likely of contemporary ca. 1860 vintage. Following this 71pp report is the 256pp "Testimony Taken before the Select Committee, appointed by the United States Senate, to inquire into the facts and circumstances connected with the invasion and seizure of the Harper's Ferry Armory in October, 1859" and is dated 5 January 1860. Fascinating transcript of this Senate Committee's questioning of 32 figures (which include John A. Andrew, Joshua R. Giddings, William H. Seward and Henry Wilson). A sharp copy with fine contemporary John Brown image.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. Octavo, 255pp., plus Index to Testimony at rear. A very good copy in the publisher's brown blind-tooled cloth, with gilt spine, which reads "Harper's Ferry Invasion." Mild wear to extremities, and very light foxing, but a sound, clean copy. A notable association copy, bearing this pencil inscription on the front free endpaper: "Saml. Hanson, Jnr. 1861 Jan 18/61 from Jefferson Davis, Esq. Senator from Mississippi." Though someone has pencilled the word "autograph" above the inscription, the inscription is clearly in Hanson's hand, and cerrtainly does not contain Davis's autograph. Nevertheless it appears that this copy of Virginia Senator James Murray Mason's report on the Harper's Ferry raid was given from Davis to Hanson, and at a very busy moment in Davis's career. On January 6, 1861, Mississippi had seceded from the Union. Davis remained in his senate seat until the 21st, when he received official notification of secession. Thus, on the day he gave the book to Hanson, he was just three days away from resignigng his seat. We have not been able to identify Hanson. John Brown's brazen and heroic raid on Harper's Ferry was viewed by southerners as a serious provocation, and no doubt Davis's firm pro-slavery views would have informed his reading of this text, drifting him further and further towards secession. The bookplate of esteemed book collector Philip Greely Brown is affixed to the front paste-down.

Folio. ?Lt. Colonel Cunninghame's journal outlines the early days of the invasion of Guadeloupe, a pivotal action in the Seven Years' War, in which the British would ultimately take control of the island from the French. Beginning on 13 January, Cunninghame describes the amassment of ships in Carlisle Bay and his own preparations for battle. He then describes the initial deployments on 16 January: "The Army disembarked about 2 or 3 miles nearer Port Royal without Apposition, and took the strongest Post near to Negro Point, which was the deadliest communication with the Fleet." After describing the fortifications and future plans, Cunninghame goes on to describe, in stark detail, the invasion of Basse-Terre on the morning of 22 January: "The 22nd the whole Fleet plied off the Bay of Basseterre, next morning the Ships went in and attacked the Fort & Batteries as expressed in the Plan, by Night these Batteries were silenced. The bombs were ordered in to play upon the Fort & did some Execution, they threw Carcasses into the Town which was set on fire burnt a great part of the Night in several Places and all next Day which consumed most Part of the Town." The document concludes with a description of several of the smaller skirmishes that followed and the fortification of the posts that the British took possession of, ending his account on 29 January. The invasion continued until the French surrendered on 2 May 1759, though Guadeloupe would eventually be ceded back to France as a result of the Paris Treaty.
