Three old horizontal folds, chipping to margins. A remarkably rare example of polemical commercial lobbying literature, issued in an attempt to influence opinion in the run up to debates and divisions in the House of Commons, regarding potential harm to curriers and leather dealers if they are prohibited from selling hides and skins in pieces, at a cheaper price, to manufacturers of saddles, and that 'in Case of such Restraint, the Army could not, upon any emergency, be supplied either so Cheap, or with such Expedition as they now can be.' First edition. 16pp. With three photo-lithographed and 15 photozincotyped plates. Modern dark green half-morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, marbled paper boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Original publisher's stiff wrapper bound in. Book-label of John Gadd to FEP, wrappers worn. The first edition, finely bound, of a guide to the Larmer Tree Gardens of Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers (1827-1900), British Army officer, ethnologist, and archaeologist. Opened in 1880, the pleasure gardens, which sat near Tollard Royal in South Wiltshire, provided both entertainment and education, with Pitt-Rivers constructing numerous informative structures across the main lawn, alongside a custom-built racecourse, an eighteen-link golf course, a bowling green and lawn tennis courts, and a Singing Theatre. An archaeology enthusiast, Pitt Rivers spent his lifetime acquiring an expansive international collection of over 20,000 cultural and historic objects, the donation of which allowed for the foundation of the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford. Mark Bowden notes in his 1991 biography that the Larmer Gardens served as a convenient meeting-place for the public to interact with Pitt-Rivers himself: 'Frank Adams recalled: 'Now if you should happen to pick up a half dozen coins which is quite an easy thing to do after these excavations . proudly take them to Larmer on a Sunday afternoon; if you see him by himself strolling across the lawn and show him these coins, it would please him immensely that would. He thought you had an interest in archaeology.' Size: 8vo.…

A rare survival of an elaborately produced broadside comprising the substance of a speech delivered by Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827) in which he, a vehement Prostestant, expresses the hope that 'no further concession may be made to the Roman Catholics' in relation to the question of Catholic emancipation and the repeal the Test Acts. 26pp, [2]. Docket title to verso of terminal leaf. Disbound. Later resewn. Early alternate pagination in manuscript to upper corners. From the recently dispersed library of William St Clair, with his distinctive pencilled ownership inscription to head of title. A series of dispatches relating to the violent torture of Cape Coast native Robert Erskine. In 1847, whilst a domestic in the service of Captain Augustus William Murray of the 1st West-India Regiment, and stationed at the infamous Cape Coast Castle, Erskine was accused of having stolen sundry articles of jewellery from the officer. Despite his protestations of innocence, and a lack of any evidence connecting him with the crime, Erskine was brutally tortured for eight days. In consequence of his torment he lost the use of his hands. It was later ascertained that the actual culprit was a soldier of the 1st West India Regiment, and likely one of the individuals who engaged in Erskine's maltreatment. A year after the event, the Aborigines Protection Society took up Erskine's case, and successfully prosecuted it in 1851. From the recently dispersed library (without any indication of such) of British scholar and senior civil servant William St Clair (1937-2021), and presumably used by him in his research for his acclaimed book The Grand Slave Emporium: Cape Coast Castle and the British Slave Trade (2006). First edition. 6pp. Docket title to verso of final leaf. A trifle creased, some very short tears to margins. A rare survival, ordered to be printed by the House of Commons, of copies of correspondence concerning the setting up of a British expedition to Niger to attempt to repress the foreign slave trade. The expedition, organised by the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa, was ultimately mounted in 1841 using three British iron steam vessels to travel to Lokoja, at the confluence of the Niger River and Benue River, where treaties against the slave trade where achieved - despite significant casualties from illness amongst members of the expedition - with the cities of Aboh and Idah. OCLC records copies at four locations (Florida, Harvard, NYPL, and Oxford); COPAC adds no further. Size: Folio.…
