Marbled endpapers; tear to ffep. Antiquarian ink and pencil writing on early and late leaves including signatures of "Spencer S. Johnson (1811-1837) who is interred at Johnson Cemetery in Dallas County west of Selma. Foldout frontispiece present but torn and creased with far left section detached; edge-worn Hamilton portrait plate opposite page 144 detached and now laid-in; varied foxing/toning and some stains throughout. Binding remains firm. Features an essay "A Summary View of the Causes which led to the American Revolution" (pages 5-33) followed by biographies of fifty-six American Revolutionary War era figures. Published without a table of contents so no list of the book's illustrations but present are frontispiece and portrait plates opposite page 99 (Nathanael Greene), opposite page 144 (Alexander Hamilton), and opposite page 315 (George Washington). The book was issued in several editions and imprints with OCLC citing the first being 1825 with later editions issued in 1829, 1830, 1831, and 1832. The title page of this 1831 Philadelphia imprint does not specify an author but Amos Blanchard, editor of the Cincinnati Journal, is credited as the author for two 1832 Cincinnati editions, one published by A. Contemporary full leather binding; staining, scuffing, and worn corners to slightly bowed boards which are decorated with gilt borders; front joint splitting with front board somewhat tenuous; muted gilt tooling to spine with gilt lettered title at center; spine heel chipped. Marbled endpapers. Foldout frontispiece lacking. Pencil and modern ballpoint ink writing on ffep verso and on opposing title page; title leaf (pages i-ii) and pages iii-iv missing sections of top margins so as to remove past owner's antiquarian signatures; varied foxing/toning to interior leaves with dampstains to initial and rear leaves; occasional margin chips to leaves as well as scattered soiling and pencil marks; remnant slender stub evidencing missing rear flyleaf. Text block remains firm. Else a good antiquarian copy. Features an essay "A Summary View of the Causes which led to the American Revolution" (pages iii-xxxii) followed by biographies of fifty-six American Revolutionary War era figures. No table of contents listing book's illustrations but LoC catalog copy calls for five plates - so with aforementioned missing foldout frontis book is otherwise correct with four unpaged b/w plates present and bound-in facing page xxv, 253 (tear), 344 (bottom margin chip), 353 (deep margin chip and tear). Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Fine. First Edition. Melbourne, Charlwood and Son, Booksellers, Stationers, and Printers, [July 1867]. Duodecimo (167 × 108 mm), 4 pages plus the wrappers. Original blue title-wrappers (with advertising on all three other sides of the covers); a very fine copy. Trove has enabled us to established beyond doubt the date of publication - Saturday 20 July 1867 - according to the advertisements in the 'Argus' on that and the previous day. Ferguson 9927 (noting a curious variant, with the four text pages numbered 3-6, as per the digitised Petherick copy available online; in our copy they are numbered 1-4). Gill's magnum opus is still pretty funny, contemporary political correctness aside; for that reason, we'll skip quoting from the first page and a half. By this stage in the timeline, responsible government has been achieved, but the Battle of Eureka has yet to be fought (thus, between January 1851 and December 1854). Here, the author 'will pass over a lapse of years, during which nothing of any importance occurred - except the introduction of meat or fruit pies, all hot, and the unlimited consumption of two ales - and come to the period when Charles I., surnamed Hotham, ascended the throne'. Accompanying the item is a photocopy of a four-page manuscript key to personalities and events alluded to in the screed; this is originally written, signed and presumably compiled by Edward Edgar Pescott (1872-1954), horticulturalist, naturalist, author, bibliographer, and book-collector of some consequence.

Small portion of inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Very light foxing and offsetting. A 1714 petition on the subject of direct, political representation A rare and interesting British political petition relating to the right of burgesses to serve in Parliament for St. Edmundsbury, Suffolk. The document traces the political structure and representation of St. Edmundsbury from ancient times through the establishment of the town as a free borough by King Richard II, its charter that soon followed, and a controversy over rights to electing members of Parliament beginning in 1680. The petitioners write that the controversy is based on the question of "In whom the right of Election Resides, whether in the Freemen and Inhabitants of the said Town.or in the Alderman, Capital Burgesses, and Burgesses of the Common-Council." Parliament would decide upon the latter in a resolution passed April 27, 1714. An interesting look at the issue of direct representation closely preceding the major changes in British government of 1714 and 1715, and an early example of lobbying literature. ESTC records three copies: at the British Library, Oxford, and the National Library of Wales. Hanson 1966.
