Original pictorial wrappers, stapled. [116]pp. Illustrated. Some old stains to front cover, light edge wear, a very good copy. Moses Bruine Cotsworth (18591943) was an accountant and "pyramidologist" who moved to Canada in 1910. He championed the concept of a revised calendar, based on a "Yearal" which would have 13 months of 28 days and a "Skip-Day". His home in New Westminster, B.C. served as the headquarters of his organization: the "International Almanak Reform League". The book was printed in Vancouver by Saturday Sunset Presses. Very curious and uncommon. …

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Contemporary half tan morocco, neatly rebacked retaining (and restoring) lettering-label. Covers slightly faded and marked, corners rubbed, frontispiece portrait a little spotted, frontispiece and title-pages each lacking fragment at corner. From the collection of Lady Jane Howard, daughter of the 12th Earl Waldegrave, with the ownership signature of Dorothy Condon Falknor; taped to the rear free endpaper a news-cutting about the 1960 sale of "Three rare Sheldon tapestry maps", ex Horace Walpole. "George Robins and his staff," writes Allen T. Hazen (A Catalogue of Horace Walpole's Library, 1969), "were vigorous merchandizers but not skilled bibliographers. In consequence, details of authors, titles, and editions are obscured either by atrociously faulty transcriptions, by the translation of some Latin titles, by omission of dates, or by the customary practice of grouping lots as 'four curious old tracts' or as 'eight other.' The cataloguing was so bad that Lord Waldegrave [Walpole's heir, John James Waldegrave, sixth Earl Waldegrave] was advised to protest, and Robins then engaged Samuel Leigh Sotheby's help to make corrections; the books of prints in the Round Tower planned to be sold on Days 7 and 8, were on Lord Waldegrave's orders withdrawn from the sale, to be subdivided and recatalogued for a new sale in London a month later. Additions and corrections were made to the catalogue of books (Days 1 to 8) and to the whole catalogue in a confusing series of changes." Hazen identifies seven variant editions in consequence: this copy conforms to his Edition I, the original edition ("There are only 152 lots in the Tenth Day, and 140 lots in the Twelfth Day"). The Times reporter was divertingly snooty about the sale, writing during the preview (which was a crush - "the place has resembled a fair"), "Notwithstanding the very imperfect manner in which the catalogue of the collection at this place is drawn up, the blunders in which it abounds, and the heaps of odds and ends, the trumpery tags and tatters of antiquated affectation, which it describes, it is not unworthy the perusal of those who feel interested in the gossipping sort of history which in some sort it helps to illustrate . . . The difficulty is to find out in the heterogeneous mass those portions which will repay the search, and to extricate from the jumble the valuable and important. There are many things deserving of respect in the collection, but they bear so small a portion to what is utterly worthless and no better than the sweepings of a broker's stall, that it requires tolerable patience, and some portion of spare time, to detect and divide them from their associated rank and file of rubbish." The "sanguine" predicted the sale would raise £50,000, those "less credulous of the folly of their neighbours", £25,000; in the event, the Strawberry Hill lots made a respectable £29,612, augmented by £3837 from the later London sale (the library, including MSS and prints, accounting for some £7700). Dorothy Gerrish Condon (1897-1987), a collector of porcelain, as inevitably was Walpole, married in 1920 Judson Fahnestock Falknor, Dean of the University of Washington Law School, 1936-51; her collection of European ceramics is now at the Seattle Art Museum.…

First Edition. First edition, 4to, pp. xxiv, 250; mounted lithographic frontispiece portrait of Walpole by G. Madeley after Eckhardt; woodcut title, vignettes in the text; original cloth-backed blue pictorial wrappers creased and worn; spine ends chipped, good and sound. Tipped in at the front is a printed slip from W. Forster, "of No. 4 Lower James Street, Golden Square" who "begs leave to inform the Nobility and Gentry that, by the kind permission of Mr. George Robbins, he will attend at Strawberry Hill during the whole of the View and Sale, and will be happy to undertake the commissions of those who may be kind enough to favour him with their commands." Part of the preface is a description of Strawberry Hill by W. Harrison Ainsworth. At the end (p. 250) of the volume is an admission that this present edition carries inaccuracies, all of which will be rectified in the second edition.…
