Toning and soiling as well as patches of surface abrasion to text block edges. Front free endpaper and perhaps a flyleaf lacking; first leaf present is frontispiece. Two leaves of unpaged publisher advertisements at rear with rear free endpaper and probably at least one flyleaf lacking too. Old pencil and antiquarian ink writing on initial and rear leaves; some staining and foxing to pages as well. Binding shows some stress points but otherwise firm. Only a good copy.

"Non-craft artists" worked with assistance from craft artists at The Fabric Workshop, The New York Experimental Glass Workshop, Bennington Potters, Clayworks and other such venues. Among the artists participating were Lynda Benglis, Scott Burton, Anthony Caro, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Morris, David Smith and Chuck Close.Scarce.

Contemporary brown calf leather; boards and spine scuffed and stained; shallow chipping at spine ends; board corners worn; spine's original maroon title label retains bright gilt lettering albeit with some edge nicks and flaking to top and bottom gilt bars; faded handwritten ink signature near spine head with illegible word also in old ink below spine label. Antiquarian dark ink staining to text block's top edge with leaves varyingly affected at their top margins; four-line addition solution in antiquarian ink on front free endpaper with past owner's pencil signature at top right; antiquarian ink marks to title leaf; varied foxing and toning throughout but most prevalent on early leaves; At least one front flyleaf removed - title leaf is immediately opposite ffep verso; concluding page 768 immediately opposite rear pastedown so missing rear free endpaper and perhaps a flyleaf or two as well. Text block remains firm. Uncommon antebellum Alabama imprint by Tuscaloosa, Alabama printer Marmaduke J. Slade (ca.1807-1857) who was also publisher of the "Tuscaloosa Monitor" newspaper. Born in Warren County, North Carolina, Slade learned his trade from Raleigh printer Joseph Gales, Sr. and moved to Georgia circa 1830 where he published newspapers initially in Macon from 1831-1832 and then in Milledgeville from 1833-1834. Slade moved to Tuscaloosa circa 1835-36 as his oldest surviving imprint is a University of Alabama baccalaureate address by Alva Woods in December 1836 for the school's fifth annual commencement; Slade's Tuskaloosa (the contemporary preferred spelling) imprints apparently terminate in 1847 with OCLC only citing documents involving Slade post-1850. An attorney, judge, and politician, compiler Clement Comer Clay (1789-1866) was the eighth Governor of Alabama (1835-1837) and also served in the state legislature (1827-1828), the U.S. House of Representatives (1829-1835), and the U.S. Senate (1837-1841). Clay's son, Clement Claiborne Clay (1816-1882), also served as a U.S. Senator from 1853-1861 thereafter being a Confederate States Senator from Alabama from 1862-1864. Clay (1777-1852) represented Kentucky in the Senate for many years, first elected in 1806. His lengthy and important political career included Secretary of State and Speaker of the House, and several presidential bids…. He was key in formulating the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850, issues relative to slavery and statehood. Though he states that he is retiring from the Senate "forever," Clay would return to serve a final term from 1849 until his death in 1852. Light wear at edges, some light soiling. Small tear minutely affecting a few letters of text. Very good. In a cloth folder.

A rare and anonymously-produced political cartoon attacking Henry Clay's duplicitous position on slavery, the issue that was at the fulcrum of so many political, moral, and l…egal conflicts in antebellum America. Clay, at the time a Senator from Kentucky and one of the country's most popular politicians, grew infamous for his attempts to play both sides of the slavery issue.This cartoon takes the opportunity of one of his 1839 Senate speeches to skewer his views on slavery as he angled for another presidential nomination.The text points out the hypocrisy and contradictions in his words and attitudes.Audiences above the Mason-Dixon Line hear Clay proclaim: "I consider Slavery as a Curse, a curse to the Master and a grievous wrong to the Slave," insisting he was "no friend to slavery," while those in the South are assured that as an owner of three-score humans he "will continue to oppose any scheme, whatever, of emancipation, gradual or immediate."The text also points out his contradictory views on dueling.An illustration of Mason & Dixon's Line separates his views on slavery.South Carolina's John Calhoun who, with Clay, was two-thirds of the Senate's "Great Triumvirate," and was the country's most prominent slavery advocate, shakes Clay's hand and promises his support.He assures Clay that abandoning his "'folly & delusion' about liberty" and endorsing slavery as the "'most safe & stable basis for free institutions'" will also secure South Carolina's support in his next presidential run: "you shall be made President for life." Both men are mindlessly standing with one foot upon a prone enslaved man. In addition, Clay stands upon a torn portion of a Kentucky Convention Bill (likely addressing the issue of fugitive slaves), and Calhoun's left foot stands on a torn part of a memorials and resolutions from Vermont and Massachusetts affirming that "All men are created equal and entitled to liberty &c.'" The afflicted and enslaved African-American man on which they trample to the viewer, in a quote from the Old Testament Book of Micah (7:8, relating to the rise of Israel): "Rejoice not against me O mine enemy when I fall; I shall arise." Though this print bears no publication information, the style and substance point toward the work of H.R. Robinson of New York, who produced a number of sharp political attacks in the form of satirical prints in the 1830s. Not in Reilly.
