First Edition. First edition, as such. Chapters 40-49 from the King James Version of the BOOK OF GENESIS. Presumably published as a reading guide for Mann's book, which retells the story of Joseph from Genesis. No indication of a publisher. "Printed in U.S.A." at bottom of rear cover. One of the 3 entries in OCLC dates this publication 1947, without any explanation (it is in 4 libraries worldwide). The quality of the publication leads us to believe it was issued by a large publishing house -- presumably Knopf, or perhaps the Book-of-the-Month club. Off-white stapled paperwraps printed in deep blue and lettered and ruled in black on front; unpaginated; 6.5 x 9". Front corners nicked, lower rear corner chipped otherwise very good. Scarce.

(205x272mm), pp: xv,[i]+88,[2], woodcut Riccardi Press device on final leaf, title page vignette and 10 coloured plates, incl. frontispiece, with captioned tissue guards, after F. Cayley Robinson. In original quarter linen, pale blue paper boards with white title label to spine and front board lettered in black, in blue-grey dustjacket printed to spine & front board, top edge gilt others untrimmed, with silk marker, boards lightly spotted, offset from d/w to endpapers, otherwise sound, tight and very good indeed. (1862-1927), In addition to painting, Robinson designed murals, posters and theatre sets, and illustrated a number of books. His stage designs for Maurice Maeterlinck's The Blue Bird, produced at the Haymarket Theatre in London in 1909 were much admired. He studied art in London, Paris and Florence and was much influenced by Edward Burne-Jones.

Etching engraving and letterpress on paper; plate mark: 99 x 167 mm, total: 412 x 261 mm; some light smudges on the external margins. In good condition.
