Two volumes handsomely bound in sturdy, textured black cloth with pictorial paste-downs bordered by blindstamped rectangles on the front boards. With illustrated cartographic endpapers featuring Yugoslavia. The volumes are very clean and tight throughout, though the rear hinge of volume 1 is weak; virtually unread. With light blue topstaining. Both jackets have striking pictorial art work by Frank Lieberman. The jackets have the original price of $7.50 at the top of the inside front flaps. The spines of the dust jackets are worn, and lightly scuffed. The jacket on volume 1 is more worn and has 2 fingernail-sized pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine ends. The jacket on volume II is very good plus. The slipcase is intact, but has been reglued; scuffing and wear along the edges. Scarce signed by Rebecca West. Rebecca West was born Cicily Isabel Fairfield[3]in 1892 in London, England, and grew up in a home full of intellectual stimulation, political debate, lively company, books and music . In September 1912, West accused the famously libertine writerH. G. Wellsof being "the Old Maid among novelists" in a provocative review inFreewomanof his novelMarriage. The review attracted Wells's interest and an invitation to lunch at his home. The two writers became lovers in late 1913.[11]Their 10-year relationship produced a son,Anthony West, born on 4 August 1914. Wells was behind her move toLeigh-on-Seain Essex, where she lived between 1917 and 1919.[12]Their friendship lasted until Wells's death in 1946. West is also said to have had relationships withCharlie Chaplin, newspaper magnateLord Beaverbrook,[13]and journalistJohn Gunther.(Wikipedia)Max Wilk(1920 2011)was an American playwright, screenwriter and author of fiction and nonfiction books.
