Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. F. Vaux Wilson Ilustrador. 1st Edition. Burton E. Stevenson (1872 - 1962) was one of those remarkable persons who labored mightily in the land of books to bring literature to the public. He was Director of the Chillicothe public library, editor of the Chillicothe Daily News, established the Camp Sherman Library, which became a model for other libraries of the same structure on American military bases. He established the American Library in Paris, France, and was made director of the American Library Association's Library War Service ("Books for Sammies" !). How he found time to write novels and edit his many anthologies is a wonder. But he wrote nearly 25 novels, at least four books for youth, and edited more than 10 anthologies. No slouch when it came to intellect, Stevenson rewrote one of his novels ("The Mystery of the Boule Cabinet; a Detective Story") into Latin ("Mysterium Arcae Boule"). "Affairs of State" concerns the activities and small adventures of an American family visiting The Netherlands. While there they encounter and interact with various personages of titled rank (a Prince, among others). It is an astute account of the differences between Americans and Europeans. Oh yes - lest we forget - it is a romance - hence we see a play on words in its title. The full title is, "Affairs of State, being an Account of Certain Surprising adventures which befell an American Family in the Land of Windmills." The text is charmingly accompanied by half-tone plate illustrations by F. Vaux Wilson. TITLE : Affairs of State, Being an Account of Certain Surprising Adventures Which Befell an American Family in the Land of Windmills AUTHOR : Burton E. Stevenson (1872 - 1962) ILLUSTRATIONS : F. Vaux Wilson IMPRINT : Henry Holt and Company PLACE : New York DATE : 1906 EDITION : First Edition STATUS : OP - Out of Print PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade hardcover in publisher's trade binding; has plate illustrations, including frontispiece with tissue guard; publisher's device on title page; 335 pages + five pages of publisher's promotional list; approximately 5" x 7 1/4" ; light gray, finely ribbed cloth with decorations and title effected in black, red and gold on spine and front board. CONDITION -VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR Their modest surface rub, slight scuffing, and spotting (most noticeable on rear board) - there is weathering along top edge of front board - and also on the top turn-ins of the cloth (just. outside where the end-papers begin); spine extremities are compressed and display mild abrasion - text-block edges are toned but clean. On the whole the book presents nicely with red and gilt decorations displaying brightly. BINDING - Fairly solid, if somewhat relaxed - It is obvious that the book has been read but no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole presents solidly. INTERIOR - There are scattered small, near-negligible spotting or smudging - a few leaf edges are nicked and there is small loss near the top of one fore-edge (pp 325 / 326) - else the interior is clean and presentable.
