Ownership inscription and brief summary in pencil by C[harles] Walmsley of King's College, Cambridge. Walmsley (1891-1962) was a distinguished mathematician who later became Professor of Mathematics at Dalhousie, Canada. Rare first edition of Hobson's most important work, the hugely influential first English book on the measure and integration theory developed by Baire, Borel and Lebesque. Ernest William Hobson (1856-1933) was Sadleirian Professor of Pure Mathematics at Cambridge from 1910 - 1931. His first edition of 1909 was soon out of date and a revised and enlarged second edition in two volumes was published in 1921. A third edition followed in 1927. The first edition is reasonable well held institutionally in the UK but OCLC locates only the Michigan copy overseas. Rare in commerce, RareBookHub finds no copy ever at auction and there are no traces of a copy for sale online anywhere.
