First edition of volume II of the Poems containing: The Task, a Poem in Six Books; An Epistle to Joseph Hill, Esq.; Tirocinium: Or, A Review of Schools.; and The Diverting History of John Gilpin. This volume followed the first volume which was published in 1782. Contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine which has gilt decorations. The title panel is present but the panel with the volume number is lost. The front panel is detached and the spine has cracking along the rear panel which is quite slack and chipping with a little loss to the surface at the bottom. The corners are bumped with some rubbing. There are two one inch patches of surface damage to the front panel and two narrow strips of damage near the centre of the rear panel. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown - Margaretta Phillipina Wale of Shelford near Cambridge. There is some browning around the edges of the endpapers with some light writing in pencil to the rear pastedown. The rear free endpaper has been removed. Creasing to the front free endpaper and small creases to the top corners of a few pages. Someone has made a number of annotations in pencil to final poem with all the instances of 'f' for 's' being corrected. There is light browning to the pages which are otherwise generally unmarked.
