Hardcover. Condición: Good condition. No dust jacket. 1955 edition. New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1955. Good condition. A solid reading/reference copy. Previous owner's name in several places. A few lightly soiled pages. The true story of the American Korean War GIs who chose Communist China -- who they were, and the reas…ons for their choice. Illustrated with photographs of all 21, captioned with brief biographical notes. Preface by Carl Sandburg in which he suggests this book's author is deserving of a Pulitzer award: "There may have been another series of articles more deserving of a Pulitzer award but I have not met it. Seldom in past years has a Pulitzer award been made for an achievement of the proprotion of TWENTY-ONE STAYED." Bound in the original two-tone cloth (red and black). From a review by brianyos: "At the end of the Korean War, POWs had the choice to return to their home country or stay with the capturing country. Many North Koreans stayed in the South, many PRC Chinese defected to the ROC, and 21 Americans stayed with 'the Reds.' What could have motivated them to defect to "Communist China"? This book details a little what life was like in the POW camps, and goes into detail on what the lives of the 21 were like before they joined the army. 19 of the 21 had poor relationships with their fathers, and some had lost their mothers at an early age. Many grew up poor, some desperately, and three were African-Americans who didn't want to return to Jim Crow law era America." From the July 3, 1955 New York Times book review: "MORE effective with her statistics than her sentiment, Virginia Pasley presents here an indictment of those of us who sent young soldiers to the Korean war untrained, unarmed, undedicated. They got their guns all right, and their military hardening, but they were in tragically short supply of that moral ammunition.". 1955 edition. Hardcover. Good condition/No dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 8vo. xi, 248pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping. NOT a library discard (ilustrador).
