It was translated by Ralph Manheim, and has an Introduction by Michael Harrington. Published in 1969 by Harcourt, Brace & World in hardcover format. OP *************************************** From the dust-jacket blurb : " Günter Grass entered the political arena in 1965, when he delivered 52 election speeches throughout Germany in praise of democracy, the Social Democratic Party, and Willy Brandt. Born in Danzig in 1927, forced to be one of Germany's soldiers at sixteen, and an American prisoner of war at 17, Günter Grass extends his political commitment beyond his literary work, His is the unprecedented effort on the part of a German writer to use his fame in what he considers the best interests of the nation, speaking out on all current issues, and fighting, in a country without deeply rooted democratic traditions, for the processes of parliamentary democracy. The texts include two of his election speeches, speeches on student violence, on the Czechoslovakian crisis, open letters to political figures, and political commentaries." **************************************** CONTENTS : Editorial Note / Introduction / List of Abbreviations / The Issue / Song in Praise of Willy / On the Self-Evident / On Writers as Court Jesters and on Non-existent Courts / Speech to a Young Voter Who Feels Tempted to Vote for the N. Spine extremities are compressed; the boards and spine display modest signs of handling; surface rub is mild; fore-edge corner tips are softly bumped; the front board has two minute dents, one to the top edge, and the other to the bottom edge. top text-block edge has mild surface rub, else edges are clean and free of marking. / BINDING -- The book has been read and thus is not as tight in the case as when issued and the leaves open easily; the first signature (gathering) is just slightly shaken, but no leaves are detached or loose, the whole being fairly solid. / INTERIOR -- There is an erasure at the top of the half-title which has thinned the paper a bit, else the interior is clean and free of marking - no underlining, no writing or marginalia, no signatures. / DUST-JACKET -- The Jacket displays moderate surface rub and a touch of abrasion; there is a bit of small spotting and a bit of light smudging; edges display wear (nicking, small tears and minute loss - this is most noticeable at the spine.
