NASA made extensive landing safety improvements, including upgrades of the orbiter fleet's tires, brakes, and nose-wheel steering mechanism," all surely bound to eliminate deadly O-ring failures during vertical takeoff, causing the deaths of all on board. Launius was NASA's chief historian (let's rank him right up there with any French historian who can dismiss the Battle of Waterloo in two paragraphs, insisting it had the benefit of bringing about "much needed reforms to the design of French army wagon wheels" -- though he does acknowledge that Porky the Space Bus turned out to be vastly more expensive and less "reusable" than advertised), while Ulrich was curator of the NASA Art Program (and who'da guessed, once the moon was reached in 1969 and the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, that come 1998 the taxpayers would still be funding the "NASA Art Program"? Good thing such bizarre and endless spending hasn't caused any "inflation"!)
