Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. Poster depicting the scene of the 1976 Soweto uprising massacre. On June 16, 1976, thousands of Black South African schoolchildren marched in peaceful protest against a state mandate enforcing Afrikaans as the medium of instruction. Heavily armed apartheid police opened fire on the unarmed students, initiating a wave of violent suppression that resulted in hundreds of youth casualties. The featured phrase "The tree of liberty is watered with the blood of patriots" is a direct adaptation of Thomas Jefferson's famous 1787 letter, in which he famously wrote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." In this context, it honours the student casualties as heroic patriots who sacrificed their lives for the liberation struggle. The poster exists in the African Activists Archive. It was digitized by the International Institute of Social History in the Netherlands and made available to the Archive. This archive lists the publisher location as unknown. Officially recognized historical artifacts and can be found in the following repositories: The Bodleian Libraries (University of Oxford): Holds pristine physical copies within the definitive British Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) archive. The African Activist Archive (Michigan State University): Digitized online as part of a massive global repository preserving African liberation movement ephemera. The specific individual illustrators remain uncredited and anonymous. This was intentional, as the work was published collectively under the state committee to present a unified international voice.
