Añadir al carritoOblong 4to. 12.5 x 9.75 in. [48 pp (unpaginated).], thick black paper stock, w/ 177 black & white silver gelatin photos on glossy photo stock, tipped-in, sized from 2.5 x 3.5 in. up to 4 x 6 in., with nearly all including white ink captions, below, or on the sides, white ink manuscript for title page. Contemporary embossed & padded simulated leather post-binder album, painted embossed cover illustration of Ancient Egyptian figures leading bulls, papyrus reeds sewn into fore-edges (with some loss), rounded corners (minor edgewear, rubbing, wear to corners), still a VG- exemplar. This excellent photo album documents the trip of a Northern Assurance Co. Ltd. insurance executive to their Egypt & Near East Branch office in the Fall of 1938 to 1939. Nicholson (fl. 1920-1940) begins with photo images of the voyage off France, Italy & Sicily to Egypt in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the P&O RMS Cathay, with images of Stromboli, the Chateau d'If, Marseilles, and shipboard passengers. These are followed by photos of the arrival in Port Said, the stay in the historic Eastern Exchange Hotel (now demolished), street scenes in the native quarters, the harbor, piers, lighthouse, views of the Suez Canal, and more. Included as well are photos of mosques and monuments in Port Said, street and water scenes in Ismailia, a trip through the desert to an oasis by Alexandria in a 1932 Ford Coupe, with views of camels, and the car in the market, his arrival in Alexandria, as well as the interiors of the company offices on 33 Rue Cherif Pasha in Alexanderia. There are many photos of Alexandria including the Royal Palace, the College of Saint Mark, the Strand, the Mahmoudieh Canal, street scenes, gardens, and more. The album closes with views of Cairo, the museum, Zuwela Gate, the Citadel built by Saladain, the Mameluk Tombs, funeral procession, Nilebride boat, many of the pyramids, and Tutankhamen's (Tutankhamun) treasures in the Cairo museum. The Northern Assurance Co. was founded in 1836 as the North of Scotland Fire and Life assurance Co., renamed in 1848, and by the early 20th century had become a specialty company in the marine insurance and shipping insurance business, and had established their Alexandria, Egypt branch office in 1855. Añadir al carritoInteresting photo album, probably compiled as a souvenir of a journey through the Holy Land, Egypt, Athens and Venice in the 1890s. Complete souvenir albums were sold by photographer's studios and dealers alike. However, the fact that the current album has several blank pages at the end, lacks a binding title and contains photographs showing several different countries, suggests that it was compiled by an individual traveller. Among the photographs of Athens, is an image of the statue of Themis, excavated in 1890 in Rhamnous and subsequently transported to Athens. The inclusion of this photograph suggests the album was compiled in or soon after 1890.The largest part of the album contains photographs of Egypt and Jerusalem. After a view with numerous watermelons at the market of Jaffa, it shows views of Ramlah, Bethany (al-Azariya), Khan al-Ahmar ("scene of the 'good Samaritan' episode") and the convent Mar Saba. Before the views of Bethlehem on Christmas day, are two photographs showing local inhabitants: a single rider with his horse before the river Jordan and a Bedouin camp near Jericho. All the major sites of Jerusalem are present, including the Mount of Olives, Wailing Wall, Solomon's Stables and the Jaffa Gate with more watermelons. A misplaced image of the coppersmiths of Cairo appears before images of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The images of Egypt mostly show the river Nile and the Pyramids, but also a busy market in the garden of Gezireh, the interior of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and a mummy. Typical images of Athens and Venice follow, with the final image showing a gentleman and two ladies feeding the pigeons on the Piazza San Marco. With the captions of several of the photographs transcribed in pencil or ink. Binding worn at the extremities. Paperboard album leaves with a few spots and several tears, most of the header corners damaged and several repaired. Photographs in excellent condition, a few with some spots and light damage at the sides. Contemporary brown half morocco, buckram boards. Oblong album (41.5 x 31 cm) containing 62 albumen prints, mostly 23 x 28 cm, with 2 smaller prints of ca. 16 x 28 and 5 large prints of 35.5 x 27 cm. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned on the negative in French, and sometimes also in English. Pages: [59], [11 blank] pp.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. A booklet of detachable postcards, containing 23 (of 24) postcards, with the first one detached, and the last one no longer present. Slightly overlapping wrappers a little worn; minor signs of handling; overall, in very good condition. The booklet was sent by 2901 Private Ernest Stewart, 7th Battalion, to his sister Lill in Hamilton, Victoria. He has written the date '26/10/15' on the front cover, and his address at the time was Zeitoun Camp, Egypt. He has written messages to her on blank pages at the front and rear, as well as on the verso of all 23 postcards, presumably intending to send them one at a time. For example, one message starts 'Dear Lill, I shall be at the Front when you get this, tell Mum not to worry as I am all right'. On the last page he writes 'Keep these & I shall be able to tell you all about them if I come back'. He did survive the war, after transferring between the 59th, 7th and 58th Battalions, and embarked for Australia in April 1919.
