Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. "In stitching together a net of letters and documents, Temple has produced the most comprehensive account yet of the Wakefield family's role in colonial development and self-government across the old Commonwealth. He follows not only the brothers' careers but also establishes the role of the Wakefield women and gives detailed accounts of Edward Gibbon Wakefield's first elopement and his later abduction of Ellen Turner. Temple explores Edward Gibbon's tortuous career through colonial politics from the 1830s to the 1850s and shows how he and his brothers and son strongly influenced, for good and bad, the founding of new nations. This engaging narrative, written in a strong and evocative literary style, relates a story of courage and vision, cupidity and stupidity, high risk and adventure, success against the odds and, ultimately, terrible tragedy. Añadir al carritoSoft Covers. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Portraits Ilustrador. 2nd. The Wakefield family, through the New Zealand Company, was instrumental in developing settlements at Wellington, Nelson and Canterbury, and also arranged immigration to a number of other British colonies. Following some dubious land dealing in NZ, as well as notoriety surrounding the amorous actions of one of the Wakefield brothers, the family attracted some controversy and antagonism. In view of this, it is somewhat surprising that Philip Temple's "A Sort of Conscience" is the first definitive biography of a family so important to NZs development. This is an impressive and comprehensive account, which includes revision of some of the earlier opinions and assessments of the Wakefields. First published in 2002 with this second edition in 2003, 584 pages including extended notes, acknowledgements, bibliography, notes and index, 35 b/w portraits (photos/art). family tree at front. Color art card covers are VG+ with circular sticker for New Zealand Book Award Biography Winner 2003 on front, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Heavy book at 1.3kgs unpacked; would require additional postage for international delivery.
