Covers worn but the front cover is still clearly readable. Spine heavily worn. Two inch piece missing out of the bottom of the spine. Pages have some edgewear and some are loose.

The biggest differences between this edition and the 1848 issues are changes in the map of the United States. The most notable of these are the addition of the words "Gold Region" in California and "Mormon Set." along the Great Salt Lake. California is shown extending east to the long northwestern tail of Texas.

While the date and edition of this copy are the same as another 1848 issue, there are several differences. 1) The date on the cover is 1849, not 1848, even though the date on the title page is 1848. 2) The map of the United States shows the Southwest, recently acquired from Mexico, not questions as in the earlier state. 3) The title of this map does not include the words "Designed to Accompany Smith's Geography for Schools." which are on the earlier state. These words are omitted on other maps as well. 4) On the map of Europe, there are details in the areas of Africa and Asia shown, not the blank areas of the prior state. 5) The name of the publisher, Cady & Burgess, has been reset in type on the title page, with the same wording.
