Hardcover. Condición: Good. ca. 1876, Good Condition, 4to, Hardcover Pictorial cloth binding with gilt and black designs and titles to spine and front board in good condition. Gilt edged pages, Title Page & endpaper heavily foxed, Contents Clean, 224pp + Illustrations A Victorian travelogue in its original gilt decorated cloth, notable for the survival of an inserted printed presentation slip dated 10 February 1877, addressed to George Leopold Bryan, M.P., and sent with the compliments of the Lord President of the Council from Downing Street. The slip explains that a tariff catalogue officially recognized as a standard Book of Reference was being forwarded to Bryan, translating United States import duties into English currency. The recipient, George Leopold Bryan (1828 1880), was a prominent Kilkenny landowner, High Sheriff, and later a Home Rule aligned Irish MP. His political career and connections to the Privy Council make the presence of this document highly plausible as part of his parliamentary briefing material. The notes formal tone Downing Street 10th February, 1877 and its reference to U.S. tariff policy situate it firmly within the eras debates on Anglo American trade. Probable provenance: From the personal library of George Leopold Bryan, M.P., the Downing Street slip likely laid into the volume by Bryan himself or his household. The book later remained with the Jenkinstown estate family line until dispersal. A desirable association copy, pairing an illustrated 19th century American travel work with a rare surviving piece of official government correspondence linking an Irish MP to British Cabinet level trade communications. Feel free to contact us for a detailed account of the provenance of this book.…

12mo, (157x89mm), xii,[272]p. slightly spotted. Original canvas, edges rubbed and the boards almost detached, preserved in a modern custom-made solander box. Rare, Estc records only two copies of this edition. Furthermore, the copy which is here offered is in the original binding of canvas thus presenting an example of an early development in non-leather binding materials; and which may be seen as a precursor of later cloth edition binding. Canvas was first introduced as a binding material in the early 1770s and continued in occasional use as a sturdy and serviceable alternative to sheepskin for publications such as school textbooks and 'working books such as this, into the early decades of the 19th century. Surprisingly, this not insignificant development in bookbinding history has received very little attention. Douglas Leighton contributed an essay on the subject to The Library (Series 4 vol. 3, 1948-9, 39-49), but other than short notices, almost in passing, in Middleton's History of English craft bookbinding technique and David Pearson's English bookbinding styles, it has passed virtually unnoticed in the literature of the subject. Leighton notes that a coarse canvas made from flax, though not specifically manufactured for the bookbinder but sufficiently well suited to his purposes, he also points to the hazards of accurate dating of such bindings due to the practice of binding up copies of an edition as sales demanded; however, we feel confident that the copy here offered is in the original binding. The damage to the binding is not without its advantages as it enables on to see that, unusually for this style of binding, the sections are sewn on two alum-tawed thongs which are let into the boards. Since the binding is so interesting in its own right, we have elected not to have any restoration work done as this would affect the integrity of the book, and have therefore had an archival solander box made to house, and preserve, this example of a not inconsiderable development in bookbinding style.…

First Edition. 8vo, pp.[2], xii, [264]; with an initial advertisement and 'certificate' leaf with a woodcut facsimile signature of the editor; a good copy in contemporary buckram, somewhat rubbed and soiled.First edition thus, edited by the mathematician and almanack-maker Joseph Moon of Salisbury. Daniel Fenning (1714/151767) was the author of many textbooks covering spelling, grammar, geography, and practical mathematics. His Ready Reckoner was first published in 1757 and much reprinted like many of his books, it had wide currency in America, where it also had several printings in German. Joseph Moon (d.1817) published a Salisbury-printed almanack from the late 1770s. Here he claims to have 'bestowed extraordinary labour on correcting this useful book', recalculating every sum. ESTC records five copies only, two of which in the UK (BL and Leeds, the former wanting the first leaf) and three in the US (American Antiquarian Society, Wesleyan, and Yale). ESTC T133351.
