Rolt's writing talent with his unparalleled knowledge of Britain's industrial heritage to produce tales of real mystery and imagination. This haunting anthology takes the reader on a journey from Cornwall to Wales and from the hill country of Shropshire to the west coast of Ireland. 'The House of Vengeance', set in the Black Mountains of South Wales, tells what happens when a walker becomes lost and disorientated as the mist falls, while in 'The Gartside Fell Disaster' an old railwayman recounts the terrible night when the 'Mountaineer' came to grief. Alongside these are twelve other tales of elemental fears and strange and inexplicable happenings. First published in 1948, this enduring collection will appeal to all those who, like Tom Rolt, are passionate about the backdrop of our industrial landscape and will delight and terrify anyone who loves a good old-fashioned ghost story.

Añadir al carritoCloth. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. Joanna Dowling (dust jacket) Ilustrador. 1st Edition. A good copy of the first edition in a fair dust jacket. The author was an engineer by profession who was fascinated by our industrial past and became a noted historian specialising in railways and rail transport and canals. He was joint founder of the Inland Waterways Association. He used this knowledge to write a series of supernatural tales generally set in an industrial background. In his note to this volume he states that, while the characters are fictitious, some of the settings are based on actual places. The blue cloth binding has titles to the spine and is sound. The front board has a pale area close the side edge and some scuffs. The bottom corner is bumped and the top corner is rubbed. The spine has pulling and fading to the ends and rubbing to the joints. The back board has some faint pale marks including a pale area around the bottom corner which is turned inwards. The top corner is rubbed. Internally there is the pencil signature of Peter Ford (the editor and writer) on the front free endpaper, which has light marking around the edges. The contents are in very good clean condition with light toning to the paper. The half title page is browned. There is spotting to the top and bottom page edges visible when the book is closed. The jacket, illustrated by Joanna Dowling, has a lot of rubbing down the folds and nibbling with loss at the fold edges and the top and bottom of the spine. It is unclipped and priced at 3/6 on the front flap. There are tears up the folds and an area of repair at the bottom of the spine. There is a ?ink mark to the inside at the bottom of the back panel. This is not visible on the outside. The back panel is browned. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
