Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. New York: John S. Taylor, 1839, First Edition, 8vo., 348 pages. Book bound in a light brown original publishers cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Wear to top edge of faded spine, cloth has dark spotting with scattered foxing throughout book. Rare in publishers cloth. Lemuel Haynes was an American clergyman. A veteran of the American Revolution, Haynes was the first black man in the United States to be ordained as a minister.Haynes was a native of West Hartford, Connecticut, and was the son of an African American man and a white woman. He spent much of his childhood as an indentured servant in the house of a Granville, Massachusetts. A regular churchgoer, he began to preach as a boy. He served in the militia during the American Revolution, including garrison duty at the recently captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1776. Haynes also became an anti-slavery activist. In addition to arguing against involuntary servitude and preaching against the slave trade, Haynes also advocated against the colonization movement, arguing that people of African descent living in the United States should be entitled to the same rights as other citizens, and that having them resettle in Africa would not be beneficial.Ordained in the Congregational church in 1785, Haynes pastored a church in Torrington, Connecticut, for three years. In 1788, Haynes accepted a call to pastor the West Parish Church of Rutland, Vermont (now West Rutland's United Church of Christ), where he remained for the next 30 years. He then moved to a temporary pastorate at Manchester, Vermont, and finally to South Granville, New York, where he was pastor of South Granville Congregational Church. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Octavo, original blind-stamped brown cloth. Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing, gilt on spine surprisingly brighter than expected, cloth with rubbing and wear along the hinges, but fully intact. Uncommon, especially so in publisher s cloth. First edition of Timothy Mather Cooley's important biography of Reverend Lemuel Haynes, who fought in the American Revolution as a Minuteman, penned one of the earliest attacks on slavery by an African American and is considered the "first black person to lead a white church. Born to an African father and white mother, Haynes was abandoned in infancy and raised as an indentured servant to a white family. After his release, he "lent his own newly gained liberty to the defense of American freedom" when he became a Minuteman, joined the Continental army, and fought with Ethan Allen at Ticonderoga (Bay in Americanism, 25). "In the army, perhaps inspired by his Revolutionary experiences, Haynes penned Liberty Further Extended, an attack on the institution of slavery [later] he was licensed to preach at the Middle Granville church, possibly becoming the first black person to lead a white church." Following his ordination, "his first appointment was to the all-white church in Torrington, Connecticut" (Finkelman, Encyclopedia of African American History, 154). A very rare gem which seldom surfaces. How housed in an oatmeal slipcase with chemise and leather label.
