Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good +. No Jacket. John Rupe Ilustrador. First Edition. Set 'Em Up! by Joe(The Markee) Madden was published by the Author in cooperation with The Cornwell Press, Inc., in 1939. This MAY be an ex-library copy, but if it is, there are none of the obligatory markings to be seen, but for some reason "APR 1959" is stamped in red on the upper-left side of the back paste down page--the number "125", in dark blue ink, is seen in the upper left corner of same. Endpapers front and back as well as the text's pages are modestly yellowed in this Signed,73-year-old, 136-page, thought-to-be First Edition offering. This book is SIGNED, beneath a brief but hearty Inscription, on the front loose end page, and take up the entirety of said page. If you are familiar with Joe Madden's writings, you pretty much know what to expect. Suffice to say, he held the prevailing white biases and prejudices towards Chinese and African-American people, circa the late 1930's, and is not shy about trotting them out more or less throughout the book. He is clearly a decent man with his heart firmly in the right place, but very comfortably expresses his flaws openly and often, using them as a source of comedy, for the most part, in certain instances. And, what interests me the most is that this is clearly a man who is much smarter and sophisticated than he pretends to be, more polished than the butchered, ungrammatical English he offers as his writing "style". IN OTHER WORDS, this is one that you have to read to believe/appreciate, Reader. The book is dotted with the very amusing, period sketches(complete with captions taken from text) of John Rupe. In terms of content/subjects covered, the author is all over the place, but it is,generally, a gleaning of the insights and tidbits that he has picked up over years and years of operating a pub in some of the less-glamorous districts of New York City. The book's lone photo is the Frontispiece, two small pictures of Madden, circa 1917 and 1939, on either side of a series of Dan Martinelli(sp) sketches of Madden the lightweight(the main sketch of Madden in boxing gear, posing). Presented in ten chapters, some of the subjects/titles are "Sex, the World War, and My Pub", "I Wonder What Became of Money", "They Hit Him With the Book", "They'd Do It Naked"(his commentary on so-called "Cafe Society"), and "Here Today". There is, amazingly, a Glossary that serves as the final chapter of this book, and it may make the book worth its price all by itself, featuring such gems as Chow-Hooks, Croakers, Economic Royalist, Libretto(not what you think), Peruvian Room, Phil Harmonicas, Plasters, Readers, Strap Game, Sixer, Tops, and Wheezer. Check it out. Thanks!! Signed by Author(s).
