Weniger durch seine geschätzten, jedoch wenig revolutionären Editionen als durch pädagogische Reformen, Umstrukturierung der philologischen Ausbildung und die Gründung des ersten deutschen Philologischen Seminars wirkte er als Erneuerer der klassischen Philologie in Deutschland. - Der Bruder des verstorbenen Verlegers Fritsch übertrug die Aufgabe einer neuen Edition der römischen landwirtschaftlichen Schriften Gesner, nachdem der Philologe Schöttgen sie nicht zustande gebracht hatte.
