Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Reprint. 1955. Second printing of the first edition. 127pp. plus a 1-page list of recommended books. Max Forrester Eastman (1883-1969) was an American writer on literature, philosophy, and society, a poet, and a prominent political activist. While residing in the Soviet Union from the fall of 1922 to the summer of 1924, Eastman was influenced by the power struggle between Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin and the events leading to Stalin's eventual seizure of power. As a result of the Great Purge and the Soviet Union's totalitarianism, he became highly critical first of Stalinism and then of communism and socialism in general, and he became an advocate of free market economics and anti-communism. In this book he puts forward a carefully reasoned case against Marxian and Fabian Socialist ideologies. He shows why Socialist societies have always failed, and explains why political liberty depends upon a democratic competitive market and the price system. The book is bound in the original blue boards with silver titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean and the author has inscribed and signed the front free endpaper thus: "Greetings to Anne Johnson from Max Eastman - February 1956". The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is slightly sunned. Pieces of up to about 1" are missing from around the top of the spine and top edge and about 1/4" is missing from the bottom of the spine. The bottom edge is creased and chipped and both fore edges have holes and tears. There are also tears of up to about 1" on the top and bottom edges and most of the tears on the top, bottom and fore edges have been repaired on the reverse with tape. Signed by Author(s).

Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Max Eastman was a Renaissance man, a novelist and poet and orator who also wrote on literature and philosophy, but he was probably best known as a political radical who later became a champion of conservatism with writings such as this one, "Reflections on the Failure of Socialism." He started editing the magazine "The Masses" in 1912. "The Masses" was broadly allied with the cause of socialism and more specifically allied with the International Workers of the World. It was one of likely very few publications ever to be outright banned by the government, in this case because of its opposition to American participation in World War I. Which didn't stop Eastman: he and his sister, Crystal Eastman, soon launched another, similar publication, "The Liberator," which also had an outsized influence due to the artistic and literary talent it drew. That influence is probably why Eastman was invited to travel to the Soviet Union in 1922. Unlike many other leftists who made similar trips, Eastman's visit wasn't a flyby. He stayed for two years, learned Russian, and became friends with Leon Trotsky, whose works he translated. Also unlike many of those other American leftists, he turned against Soviet Communism very quickly and starting writing about its dangers as soon as 1925. Being against Communism as it stood in the U.S.S.R. wasn't the same thing as becoming completely conservative, however. That was a gradual process. "Reflections on the Failure of Socialism" wasn't written until 1955. Even then, Eastman stayed an independent thinker. Though he supported Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on Un-American Activities at first, he soon diverged with them, and he publicly opposed America's involvement in the Vietnam war. But "Reflections on the Failure of Socialism" marked a major public turning point in his public position and is still in print, and is still highly regarded by conservative thinkers. Our copy of the book is listed on the copyright page as a second printing in the same year as its first printing, 1955. The book itself is in amazingly good condition; the book jacket less so. The only flaws to be seen in the book itself are the signature of a previous owner on the pastedown of the inside front cover and the original price written in the top right corner of the front flyleaf. Otherwise, there are no markings on any of the pages, nor any tears, folds, or creases. The text block itself is tight and square with no missing or loose pages. The covers are in pristine condition, with the author and publisher's names and the title stamped in a very bright silver on the spine. The slightest of bumping is visible on the bottom of the spine. An original business reply card to the publisher has been inserted. There is a 3/4-inch closed tear at the bottom front of the dust jacket, and a 1/4-inch closed tear at the bottom rear. The top corners of the dust jacket are chipped, as is the bottom of the spine of the dust jacket. There is also considerable rubbing of the back of the dust jacket. The original price has not been clipped. The dust jacket front and back covers and spine are a consistent cream/off-white cover; it is difficult to tell if that is from age tanning or whether it was purposely colored that way, as every other copy we have seen has the same coloration. See our photos for details.
