With many thanks/Peter/Jan. 3, 1961". Marshall Best was an editor at Viking in the late 1950's through the 1970's, ultimately becoming Viking's chairman. He undoubtedly worked with Matthiessen on this novel, as well as earlier novels Matthiessen did for Viking.
