The poems of Ossian, translated by James Macpherson, Esq., to which are prefixed a preliminary discourse and dissertations on the era and poems of Ossian. London: printed for J. Walker [et al], 1812. Hardback, VG. Black leather, bumped to corners. Gilt frame to front and back. Spine in 5 gilt-decorated panels wit titles ingilt inside red text box to second panel. Binding strong. Frontispiece b/w engraved illustration and illustrated title page. xxxv, 489pp., contents clean and bright. 13cm x 7.5cm approx.Ossian is the narrator and purported author of a cycle of epic poems published by the Scottish poet James Macpherson, originally as Fingal (1761) and Temora (1763) and later combined under the title The Poems of Ossian. Macpherson claimed to have collected word-of-mouth material in Scottish Gaelic, said to be from ancient sources, and that the work was his translation of that material. Ossian is based on Oisín, son of Fionn mac Cumhaill (anglicised to Finn McCool), a legendary bard in Irish mythology. Contemporary critics were divided in their view of the work's authenticity, but the current consensus is that Macpherson largely composed the poems himself, drawing in part on traditional Gaelic poetry he had collected. The work was internationally popular, translated into all the literary languages of Europe, and was highly influential both in the development of the Romantic movement and the Gaelic revival. Añadir al carrito8vo, pp. 492, [5] ads; inserted frontispiece and title-p. (both foxed), plates throughout; mild dampstain pervades; otherwise a good copy in original decorative red cloth, a.e.g. Legendary Gaelic poet, supposedly the son of Finn mac Cumhail, hero of a cycle of tales and poems that place his deeds of valor in the third century A.D. These traditional tales were preserved in Ireland and in the Scottish Highlands, with Ossian as the bard who sang of the exploits of Finn and his Fenian cohorts. A later cycle of Ossianic poetry centered on Cuchulain, another traditional hero. Ossian is generally represented as an old, blind man who had outlived both his father and his son. The name is remembered by most people in connection with James Macpherson, who published translations of two poems that he said had been written by Ossian; scholars subsequently proved that they were actually a combination of traditional Gaelic poems and original verses by Macpherson himself.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Sehr gut. A new edition complete in one volume. // A PRELIMINARY DISCOURSE -- Preface -- A dissertation concerning the aera of Ossian -- A dissertation concerning the poems of Ossian -- Dr Blair's critical dissertation on the poems of Ossian -- CATH-LODA, IN THREE DUANS -- COMALA -- CARRIC-THURA -- CARTHON -- OINA-MORUL -- COLNA-DONA -- OITHONA -- CROMA -- CALTHON AND COLMAL -- THE WAR OF CAROS -- CATHLIN OF CLUTHA -- SUL-MALLA OF LUMON -- THE WAR OF INIS-THONA -- THE SONGS OF SELMA -- FINGAL, in six BOOKS -- LATHMON -- DAR-THULA // u.a.
