Añadir al carritoFour works in one volume, 8vo, pp. viii, 264; 21, [1]; [xii], 82, [6]; [xii], 96, [2]; some spotting, but generally clean and good; in contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Four works originating with Reading Grammar School, an ancient foundation which long predates the numerous grammar schools established under Edward VI: it has its origins with Reading Abbey (founded 1125) but was refounded in 1486 under Henry VII. In the last decades of the 18th century, however, Richard Valpy (headmaster 1781-1830) greatly increased its prestige and scholarship, and it became one of the premier schools in southern England. The works in this volume bear witness to the achievements of the school: the first consists of poems in English and Latin, many by the scholar William Benwell, who was Valpy's brother-in-law (and former pupil), and George Butt, a close friend. These include many prologues and epilogues to plays performed at the school, including not only obvious academic favourites such as Plautus but numerous performances of Shakespeare prologues to Hamlet and 1 Henry IV, and epilogues to King Lear and The Merchant of Venice. The elaborate editions of King John and 2 Henry IV which are also in this volume were both edited by Valpy and heavily edited, at that, since the text of King John combines Shakespeare's original with that of Cibber's Papal Tyranny. In 2 Henry IV the editor asserts that the original 'is disfigured not only with indelicate speeches, but with characters that cannot now be tolerated on a public theatre, much less in a classical exhibition' and so he has made an 'attempt to pluck the thorns from the roses'. Both plays are furnished with a prologue by Henry James Pye, the poetaster who was Poet Laureate from 1790 until his death in 1813. In 1924 this volume belonged to John Loveday, of the Reading family whose boys attended the school: several are listed as actors in the two plays.
