Print. Condición: Near Fine. Matted and ready for framing. Untrimmed. An exceptional example of a scarce print. A 7 x 9 3/4 sheet professionally matted down to 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 (mat measures 8 1/2 x 10 5/8). Beautiful modern hand coloring added. Labeled 20 in the upper right-hand corner. The print shows a fortification positioned on the north side of a natural waterway, with a small fortification on the opposite side as well. A bridge links the main fortification to the opposite shore, and there appears to be an area for entry by boat along the south wall. This fortress is unique in being completely surrounded by water - the river water acts as a moat between the inner and outer curtains, and also as a moat outside the outer curtain. The only land entries are the south bridge gate and a northern gate that passes through the outer curtain. The shapes of the walls illustrate the star-shaped patterns common to this era, an adaptation made to allow for defensive canonry, and to protect against siege artillery.…

Roquecourbe is a region in south central France. The print shows a unique two-part fortification positioned on both sides of a natural waterway. The larger part borders on the south, with a bridge gatehouse leading to the main road. The northern portion sits atop a plateau linked to the main road by a winding stair. Attacking forces attempting to storm the main gate would be caught in a pincer attack between the two fortresses. The limited space between river and plateau would put them at even more severe a disadvantage by reducing troops to a narrow column. The shapes of the walls illustrate the star-shaped patterns common to this era, an adaptation made to allow for defensive canonry, and to protect against siege artillery.…

Hardcover. Condición: VG. Uncommon Example of One of Tassin's Early Works Presented is Tassin's scarce atlas of France and Spain, completed in the year 1633, bound together with his atlas of the French region of Lorraine, the latter of which woul. Oblong octavo. Contemporary or possibly somewhat later full vellum (somewhat worn and stained, lacking ties). [8] A-C D D blank (1-25). 25. Maps of France and Spain: 67 numbered plates, lacking the described "Carte Generale de France" (Plate 1), with an additional 2 cartouche plates. Lorraine: [8], 23 numbered plates, with an additional 2 cartouche plates. [6]. (Dampstain in upper left and right corners of first half of book. Some manuscript on the first several pages in a17th-century French hand and 20th-century American hand.) But for the dampstaining VG or VG+. As-is, Good to VG. Uncommon Example of One of Tassin's Early Works Presented is Tassin's scarce atlas of France and Spain, completed in the year 1633, bound together with his atlas of the French region of Lorraine, the latter of which would appear in his 1634 Les plans et profils de toutes les principales villes et lieux considerable de France. This work was published in the year which Tassin started producing his atlases. Tassin is well regarded as an early French engraver with a distinct style, which can be recognized on his maps by his portrayal of trees, hydrography, and topographic features. Pastoureau says of the engraver that "Tassin is most renown for his small oblong atlases," and that while most of his works cover his native France, his works covering other parts of Europe are uncommon. The first volume of this atlas appears without the described first map, a Carte Generale de France. However, the only other described copy of this volume we were able to locate also lists this plate as not included, thus it is unclear if it was ever bound into the Cartes Generales des provinces de France et Espagne. Both volumes open with copious descriptions of the regions subsequently described. The maps themselves vary widely in scope, with some focusing on entire regions of France and Spain, and others on single, small areas, such as map 29, a full-page map of the Isle de R . In all, this is a well-presented example of this scarce work by Tassin. Nicolas Tassin Nicolas Tassin's early career was in service to the King of France as an engineer. He was subsequently appointed 'royal cartographer' and given the right to publish his discoveries for ten years. Tassin first worked in Dijon before setting up as an engraver in Paris where he issued various collections of small maps and plans of France, Switzerland, Germany and Spain. His first publications date to 1633, while his noted Les plans et profils de toutes les principales villes et lieux consid rables de France was published a year later. He subsequently updated his early works through the rest of his career, before retiring in 1644 and selling his copperplates to Antoine de Fer. Book.…

Title and verso of the last map with ink stamp of "Biblioteca Giovannini". First Edition of the Earliest Detailed Pocket Atlas of France A wonderful collection of 171 maps, plans, and views of France, published by Nicolas Tassin under the auspices of Melchior Tavernier. The atlas is the first of its type to focus on France and includes vast amounts of information detailing the country's geography in the 17th century. The atlas opens with a dedication to King Louis XIII, before providing a detailed description of the cities and regions shown in the atlas. These are fascinating, enumerating not only geographical information but also discussing history and culture. This section provides many insights into how the various regions were viewed in a geopolitical and historical context at the time of publication. The maps included are well executed and in the Tassin's distinctive style, which can be easily discerned in the unique way trees, mountains, and other natural features are depicted. The views are equally notable, with immense detail portrayed in some examples. Particularly notable is Tassin's view of Paris, taken from the west. The work is divided according to region. It includes 43 maps of Picardie, 48 maps of Champagne, 23 maps of Lorraine, 26 maps of Bretagne, 25 maps of Normandie, 16 maps of the Ile-de-France, and 15 maps of Brie. Curiously, the work opens with the maps of Brie, but only displays two before returning to the rest at the end. Each section is heralded by one or more decorative cartouche plates. A companion volume (not present here, nor called for) was published in 1636, focusing on the regions in the south and west of France, which are neglected in the present volume. Christophe (sometimes known as Nicolas) Tassin (d. 1660) became geographer and engineer to the king (Louis XIII) around 1630. The post came with publication privileges for a decade, during which he published atlases in this oblong quarto format with which he is closely associated. Tassin's Plans et Profils allowed the grandeur of France's cities in particular (in distinction to Braun & Hogenberg's catholic approach) to be shown to the world. Maps, plans and views work together to form the very best record of France flourishing under the ministry of Cardinal Richelieu. As early as 1628 Tassin acted as an architectural consultant to Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange. It was in this capacity that Tassin came to correspond with Constantijn Huygens, diplomat, composer, poet and secretary to the Prince of Orange. Their correspondence continued into the 1640's, and so it is likely that this was an author's presentation copy. Huygens did not, however, keep the volume. The dedication notes that he sent it to his "amico dignissimo" (worthiest friend), but does not name the friend. A letter (no. 1070), surviving only in a copy, clarifies: "Ook zend ik u de nieuwe werken van Tassin, waarin de plans van al de belangrijkste Fransche vestingen. Ultimo (31) Jan. 1635." (I am also sending to you the new works of Tassin, in which are the plans of all the most important French fortresses. On the last day of January 1635.). The supralibros matches those of the recipient of the letter: Joachim van Wicquefort (1600-1670). Wicquefort was also a Dutch diplomat, the agent of the Duke of Weimar. Huygens's letter makes clear that the volumes were more than aesthetic; they were tactical. Indeed, Peter Barber, former head of maps for the British Library, has described the place that gifts such as the present item had in early modern espionage. We can carry the route of this set further. After some time in the possession of the Wicquefort family, the volumes returned to France; the bookplate places them in the collection of the bibliophile Gustave Chartener of Metz (1813-1884), whose collection was sold by Hôtel Drouot 4-9 May 1885 and by Labitte 9-27 May 1885. It was probably acquired by Théophile Belin, the Paris bookseller, at that sale. Belin sold the books to an English client in 1886. They returned once again to France, entering the collection of the Musée de la Citadelle Vauban on Belle Île, off the south coast of Brittany. The set was purchased from their sale (Piasa, 16 July 2010).…
