This was quite common in wartime due to the fact that temporary field commissions were needed because of the heavy casualties, and in this instance it is most likely that at the time of his promotion to Major, Carmichael was a Lieutenant who became commanding officer due to tragedy, and that at the end of the war when he received his next commission to Captain, this was in fact the appropriate promotion.
