The best works of Demosthenes, Greek statesman and orator (384-322 B.C.) Published by Carolus Tauchntiz, Lipsiae (Leipzig), 1812, 5 volumes, complete. Scarce as a set. As far as we can tell, this 1812 edition was the first Tauchntiz printing. A good full polished calf leather binding with low raised bands, and gilt decoration. Covers rubbed and bumped with minor damages to leather. Hinges are worn and rubbed. Endpapers are intact (except for Vol II which is cracked and beginning to split), and have marbled design, matched to text block edges. Owner's inscription to blank endpaper and title page. Some additional annotations to blanks at rear of Volume I. Text pages are clean and bright throughout, with occasional light spotting. Text in Greek. This edition published a year after the Oporinus first edition of the Wolf translation. 12mo, 7" tall, with inconsistent pagination: 15 [praefatio] + 105 [tomi primi], 215 [tomi secundi], 145 [tomi tertio + vita, etc.] + [4 lectorem] + 3 corrections] , period vellum. This original copy is in better than good condition overall. The vellum is moderately soiled and marked with a 2" split at the center of the spine and remnants of a label and penned designations; the hinges and binding are solid but some separation has begun at the front hinge, the rag paper is light to moderately yellowed with minor mostly marginal foxing but with black ink redaction to every appearance of Wolf's name and a few other scattered words which would indicate a Roman Catholic censor unhappy with the Protestation scholar's work.
