Hardback. Condición: Good. College students crammed into phone booths. Couples dancing until they drop. Daredevils swallowing one live goldfish after another. Streakers dashing naked down the street. Planking and flash mobs and robotic pets. These are just some of the crazy fads that have caught hold in the United States over the last century. Where do these ideas come from and why do they catch people's imagination? Fads reflect the mood and spirit of a particular time, and they offer insight into a nation's culture. The 1950s, for example, was a time of economic prosperity and technological development. Americans expressed their delight in new inventions in many creative ways. One popular craze on college campuses was to stuff as many people as possible into a phone booth. On one campus, twenty-five people managed to squeeze into a single booth In earlier decades, marked by the Depression and World War I, dance marathon frenzy caught on. Promoters lured couples with promises of fame and monetary prizes for those who could dance for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of hours. And great ideas never die. Almost one hundred years later, dance marathons came back. One creative variation, the flash mob dance, attracts spontaneous performances that range from flash mob wedding dances to Gangnam Style K-Pop flash mobs in cities all over the world. Fad Mania> explores a century of American crazes, offering an entertaining and informative look at the major historical events of each decade and the fads that defined them. As you learn more about smiley buttons and Webkinz, you may just be able to predict this decade's next craze>. Stevenson, Susie (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Not books but a group of six, 45 rpm, vinyl "single" rock and/or rhythm & blues records, vinyl generally very-good-plus, though we'll grade Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie / Aspen Colorado" -- Mn45-1104, both sides credited to Tony Joe White -- "near mint," and thus the most valuable of this lot, this disc alone with a current market value of about $11.50. ("Polk Salad" refers to cooked pokeweed, a dish even a family from White's native Louisiana would have to be pretty poor to serve for dinner. The song -- later covered by both Elvis Presley and Tom Jones -- was White's first big hit. Well, possibly his only big hit. But it opened the way for him to do considerable writing and producing for others.) The Cliff Nobles disc may be even more interesting. The "B" side is merely an instrumental version of Nobles' "Love Is All Right" (both sides credited to producer Jesse James), featuring the studio horn section which would later become known as MFSB. Nobles himself does not actually perform on the track. But it caught fire at radio stations, selling a million copies and peaking at number 2 for three weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart -- being held out of the number one spot by Herb Alpert's "This Guy's In Love With You." Six 45 rpm "singles" from the year 1968, for one price, now reduced from $25.…
