Lacking erratta slip. A very attractive Near Fine copy (some browning to upper edges, occasional light foxing to prelims) in later full tan polished calf signed binding by E. Riley & Sons, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately decorated, brown morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of British solicitor and Justice of the Peace John Croft Deverell (1840-1931) to front pastedown. The provenance is particularly appropriate, Deverell's legal profession and judicial position closely corresponding to the subject of Ritson's works. Ritson was a British attorney and from the mid-1780s, High Bailiff of the Liberty of the Savoy. Upon taking his post, he discovered that officials could not clearly explain what bailiffs of liberties were supposed to do. He researched the subject thoroughly from primary sources and wrote these two books ('The Office of Bailiff of a Liberty' was published posthumously in 1811). The books filled a practical gap for contemporary office-holders and lawyers while serving as careful historical compilations that documented a significant but under-studied layer of English legal and administrative history.…
