4 parts in 1 volume. First collected edition of four illustrated mathematical works by the famous scientist and Jesuit Ignace Gaston Pardies (1636-1673). The work present a systematic exploration of the principles and applications of geometry following the ancient discoveries of Euclid, Archimedes, and Apollonius. It begins with foundational concepts like lines, angles, and plane figures, and gradually progresses to complex theorems and constructions. It also offers a comprehensive study of two- and three-dimensional geometry, including topics such as parallel lines, triangles, circles, polygons, prisms, pyramids, spheres, and conic sections, all illustrated.Pardies wrote numerous scientific works on horology, optics, physics, mechanics, and geometry. He played an important role in the history of physics by placing critical notes at the ideas of Descartes, Newton, and Huygens. He followed the latter two closely and even personally corresponded with them. The four works compiled in the present edition were all separately published in France: Discours du mouvement locale in 1670, Elemens de geometrie in 1671, and the latter two both in 1673. All works are here present in either third or fourth edition, but are published in one volume for the first time. The pagination of the last three works is continuing. The first work is preceded a stock-catalogue of the publisher.The boards are very slightly rubbed. The title page is very slightly soiled, a small tear in the margin of pp. 213-214, a water stain in the lower margin of the last 7 leaves. Proche de la pensée de Descartes, il y démontre que les animaux sont de purs machines. Il fut d'ailleurs fortement soupçonné de cartésianisme, et ne parvint pas vraiment à s'en défendre.

Ses travaux mathématiques réfutent nombre de positions cartésiennes et s'inscrivent dans la mouvance de ceux de Newton, avec qui il était en relation, bien qu'il critique, entre autre, sa théorie de la lumière. A la suite des textes de mathématiques et de physique, on lit un traité pratique de gnomonique appliquée dans lequel l'auteur simplifie les complexités de cette science ardue grâce à l'utilisation de deux machines simples. Le Discours de la connoissance des bêtes est l'ouvrage de Pardies qui connut le plus de retentissement lors de sa publication. Se moulant dans la position cartésienne de "l'animal-machine", il fait finalement fi du mécanisme cartésien et accorde une certaine liberté aux animaux dans le choix de leurs actions.
