Hard Cover. Condición: Near Fine. Near Fine. Reissue. Includes publisher's slipcase and insert. Jacket slightly wrinkled from previous owner applying mylar cover too tightly (now removed), minor blemishes to slipcase. 1990 Hard Cover. xi, 359 pp. Introduction by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Native Son by Richard Wright. First Edition Library, Shelton, Connecticut, 1987. First edition FACSIMILE. Slip case measures 8.75 x 5.75". 359 p. In very good condition. Slip case exhibits light shelf wear. Dust jacket remains attractive. Small spots of soiling on rear board. Text-block is bright and clean. Binding is tight and intact. Please see photos. Richard Wright was an American author of novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction. Much of his literature concerns racial themes, especially related to the plight of African Americans during the late 19th to mid 20th centuries suffering discrimination and violence. His best known works include the novella collection Uncle Tom's Children (1938), the novel Native Son (1940), and the memoir Black Boy (1945). Literary critics believe his work helped change race relations in the United States in the mid-20th century. First Editions Library (FEL) is a series of exact facsimile replicas of the first editions published by Collectors' Reprint Inc. Founded in 1987 by Henry Reath, a former president and publisher of Doubleday; his wife, Mary; and Kemp Battle, who also worked at Doubleday, the company prided itself on publishing the best of American literature as it first appeared. FEL facsimiles have the same weight, size, typeface, art, dust jacket, finish and texture as well as points of issue as the originals. In many cases, the Reaths and Battle waded into debate amongst themselves about which editions were indeed the first. With the mission of duplicating the originals as closely as possible, the publisher hired engravers to reproduce typefaces that are no longer used. They dyed both sides of paper to create a shade of green no longer available for the dust jacket on Thornton Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey. The sewn bindings, stamping and even the original price on the jacket flap of FEL facsimiles are all exact replicas. The heart of the FEL series is literary fiction of the 19th and 20th centuries, including modern classics like F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, and William Faulkner's Absalom Absalom. However, there are four categories of exception: James Bond series (14 titles), mystery series (13 titles), science fiction series (12 titles), and Published in Paris series (3 titles). In total, FEL produced 112 titles. Sometime in the 1990s, FEL stopped production and sold the rights for 49 of its facsimiles to Easton Press. However, the remaining 63 titles are out-of-print. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Harper & Brothers. New York. 1940. 359 pages. First edition stated, first printing. Publisher's A-P code present on the copyright page just below the First Edition statement. Navy blue cloth with requisite red and white/gray boxed titles on front panel and spine. 1940 date on both the copyright page and title page. Binding and hinges are sound. Endpapers are bright. Book is square with four sharp corners. Original, rare first issue DJ in yellow and bright green. This is the first state of the first edition DJ with no reviews on spine area. FWIW, second state of the first edition DJ has reviews on spine. Again, this is the first state DJ of the first edition. Attractive, rarw DJ has $2.50 price-clipped from the flap and replaced with a faint pencil price. DJ shows minor edge rubbing and minimal soiling. This super-rare DJ would grade higher if not for slight sunning to spine with an open one inch chip at crown. A most desirable, collectible copy of Richard Wright's classic. It's hard to imagine a crisper copy of this first edition exists. Book is fine, DJ is VG+ with flaws noted. A plum for any serious collector.

Wright, Richard. Native Son, 1950, brings Wright's 1940 novel of Bigger Thomas and segregated Chicago into the expanding postwar mass-market paperback market. Set on Chicago's South Side in the 1930s, the novel follows Bigger after he accidentally kills Mary Dalton, the daughter of his white employer, and traces the fear, violence, racial confinement, and legal consequences that follow. Wright's novel became a major intervention in African American literature by locating Bigger's actions within the social conditions imposed by racial segregation, poverty, restricted housing, and unequal power rather than treating his crimes as isolated acts. Wright, Richard. Native Son. New York: Signet Books, 1950. First mass-market paperback edition. 413 pages. Cover art by James Avati. The illustrated wrapper shows a somber Black man facing outward while an older woman grips his arm; a white couple stands behind them. Avati's composition translates the novel's racial and familial tensions into the visual language of midcentury paperback publishing. Signet's 1950 edition belonged to a period when inexpensive paperbacks were carrying established literary works into drugstores, newsstands, and other retail outlets far beyond the traditional bookstore market. Published ten years after the novel's first appearance, this Signet edition documents the continued circulation of Wright's portrayal of Black life in northern urban America during the era of Jim Crow. Its cover treatment is especially characteristic of the mass-market paperback industry, which frequently packaged serious literary fiction with dramatic figurative art intended for broad retail display. Minor wrinkles and scratches to covers, with creasing to spine. Otherwise good condition.

First Edition. [African American] [Literature] Wright, Richard. Native Son. First Edition. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1940. 359 pages. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". Bound in full gray cloth, stamped in navy and gold in matching, no dust jacket. This is the true first edition text, but in the later state gray binding. "Native Son" by Richard Wright has been banned in some places due to its portrayal of racism and violence, as well as its explicit language. Some critics argue that the book's content is not suitable for certain audiences, such as students in schools. However, others argue that the book's depiction of the harsh realities of racism and its impact on individuals is an important part of understanding history and society. The book is tight and clean, with the author's neat name, place on the front end paper: "B.W. Cummings" dated 1940. Some minor foxing to rear end paper. Overall, in very good condition.
