Early reprint (first published by Vanguard Press, Inc.). [6], 309 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 12.75cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Blue boards with orange lettering to spine and front board; scuffing at spine ends, along spine joints, and at board edges particularly bumped corners. Pale yellow top edge; text block edges foxed. Gutter toning to endpapers; past owner's pencil note on front free endpaper; most but not all interior leaves have a vertical foxing pattern likely resulting from aging and publisher Black's utilization of lower grade paper. Binding is firm. Relatively obscure mystery novel by Peter Hunt which was a collective pseudonym for screenwriter-author George Worthing Yates (1901-1975) and author Charles Hunt Marshall.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Good dj. Reprint. [a good sound copy, very slight bumping to lower tips, one-time owner's ink notes regarding date & place of purchase plus brief comment at top of front endpaper, on which there also appears the signature of a previous owner; NOTE also that the pages have a kind of brownish striation lines; the jacket is edgeworn, faded at the spine (but all text still readable), with light soiling and tiny bits of paper loss at several corners, a couple of closed tears internally tape-repaired]. "An Alan Miller Mystery," as were all three books by this admittedly psudonymous author, all of which were published in 1933 and 1934. (This title was originally issued by The Vanguard Press.) Alan Miller is described in the jacket blurb as "that oddity among detectives, a Chief of Polie in a suburban town whose wholesomeness and normalcy are a refreshing contrast to the prevalent crop of supersensitive sleuths." The book itself is described as a "somewhat unusual book -- an intelligent mystery story which has a considerable degree of urbanity and humor intermingled with an exhilarating series of thrilling and puzzling events." (For all those claims, though, it does follow a kind of Philo Vance-y style, by presenting the reader with detailed floor plans of the scene of the crime.) Co-author Yates, who was also quite active as a Hollywood screenwriter, later wrote a few additional mysteries under his own name; his collaborator Marshall apparently did not. The rear jacket flap biography of "Peter Hunt" is pretty funny: while admitting that the name is a pseudonym, it presents a long laundry list of the author's vitae -- schools, jobs (dozens!), etc. (I would tentatively assume these to be Yates's details -- "scenario writer" is buried in the middle of the list of jobs -- but haven't researched this.) It's possible this might have been some sort of book club edition: there is no printed price on the jacket, and the rear-panel blurb announces another title, "Coming Next Month," and in the fine print stating its availability "to members exclusively.".…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Reprint Edition, first published by Vanguard. Dustwrapper is unclipped but no price listed. No other indication of it being a book club edition, however. Red cloth boards with Deco black writing on the cover and spine. Interesting discoloration to the majority of the pages bu tit doesn't appear to be foxing. It is uniformly darkening striping that almost looks like a printing defect, as the pages are otherwise very supple and there are many that not affected at all. Great vintage dustwrapper with the image of an arrow sticking out of the skull. Has a few chips and a one inch closed tear but complete and still a terrific image, now Mylar protected. …

Murder mystery involving "Alan Miller, that oddity among detectives, a Chief of Police in a suburban town whose wholesomeness and normalcy are a refreshing contrast to the prevalent crop of supersensitive sleuths".
