Enlarged second edition, including the Supplement to the first edition (of 1862, with 60 plates) with the 5 plates marked A - E and 60 plates I - LX. Together 65 beautiful plates, lithographed in colour, hightened with gold and silver, some hand coloured. All the plates with protective tissues. The plates represents 121 bindings (in the first edition 113) from the Carolingian goldsmith's bookcovers to renaissance gold-tooled bindings containing manuscripts, block-books and printed books mainly from the 16th century and historical ornamental bindings. Also some xylographic illustrations, ancient drawings by the great masters (6) and some examples of diversity of the art of ornamentation, aboriginal workmanship, etc. - Libri was a mathematician, scientist, scholar, journalist, thief and 'Inspecteur des bibliothèques de France'. - "The bindings, all, of course stolen, offer for the first time a considerable corpus for study and comparison" (B. H. Breslauer, 1986). - Good copy with only some lightbrown spots in places (mainly to the protecting tissues), with spectacular chromolithographs 3500g.
