Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In her tenth and most powerful novel to date, Gillian Freeman vividly recreates the London theatre world of Victorian England and counterpoises this life of frivolity and artifice with the position of Jews - both rich and poor - in the wider society."'Jews! Murderers! Killers of Christ!' There was no problem of interpretation. A small group of men and women, sombre in black, children amongst them, shouted abuse as the immigrants were jostled towards the gates, still being harried for their custom." Victorian England: Simon, a young Jewish widower with a small son emigrated from Warsaw to London's East End, staying with his sister and her family until he takes up the position of cantor at a smart Reform synagogue off Lower Regent Street. His liaison with Phoebe Fenelle, a leading actress of the day, leads to dire consequences for her husband, a major in the Royal Household Cavalry - or does it? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Hardcover. Condición: Near fine. Limited Edition. Quarto, 58pp. First separate edition of this short story, which first appeared in the Partisan Review in 1986. A crisp, clean copy, very near fine, with a tiny smudge at the top edge, and the spine just a tinge cocked and faded. In the publisher's slipcase, fine. This is number 58 of 195 limited copies SIGNED by Roth on the limitation page. A very nicely produced edition. This copy with a typed letter from publisher Barnard Taylor to an old friend. The letter, of 35 lines, discusses in significant detail the origins of this book. Taylor notes that the woman in the story is based on Roth's first wife. He adds: "She had problems, of course, but Roth can be difficult to live with as see his divorce from Claire Bloom! Who would leave Claire for God's Sake!!! (emphasis original)" He goes on to discuss the finances of the press, which has a large gross income and a miniscule profit; very typical for high-quality fine press publishing. A handsome copy of this volume, with a meaningful letter from the publisher, which sheds light on publication.…
