Rising from the working-class streets of Cospicua, he became Malta's longest-serving Prime Minister, a powerful and polarizing force who fundamentally reshaped the island nation. Charting his extraordinary journey from a British colony to a sovereign republic, this comprehensive biography intertwines Mintoff's personal story with Malta's tumultuous 20th-century transformation.Delve into the pivotal moments of his controversial career: his bold push for integration with Britain, the dramatic shift to demanding full independence, the fierce conflict with the Catholic Church, the ambitious socialist reforms that created Malta's welfare state, and his assertive foreign policy that led to the departure of British forces in 1979. Explore the turbulence that defined his time, including economic challenges, social unrest, political violence like Black Monday, and the constitutional crisis following the controversial 1981 election. Trace his final years in power, his influential backbencher role, and his later opposition to EU membership.Love him or loathe him, Dom Mintoff left an indelible mark. Drawing on historical records and accounts from his era, this biography presents a balanced view of the complex man behind the myth. Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand modern Malta, it reveals the life of a leader whose vision, tenacity, and often controversial methods powerfully shaped the destiny of an island nation. Yana Mintoff is a peace activist, the daughter of Baroness Moira De Vere Bentinck and the former Prime Minister of Malta, Dom Mintoff. In 1968, at the age of 17, Yana Mintoff, travelled to Czechoslovakia on her own, outraged by the Soviet occupation of that country and its harsh repression. She worked at Olomouc as a youth volunteer and opposed the Soviet military presence. In 1973 to 1974, while working as a teacher in Greece, she was swept up in the student protests against the oppressive military Junta that had taken power in a CIA-backed coup. She was amongst the students who were attacked by the army outside the Athens Polytechnic. Many students were killed and she was shot at three times before managing to escape. In 1974 she contributed to the Granada television documentary series World in Action. The subject was a scandal involving British architect John Poulson and the building of a 'white elephant' hospital on the Maltese Island of Gozo, opened by Queen Elizabeth II.
