Añadir al carritoLeather. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. An early edition of W L Mackenzie King's speeches in Canadian parliament. Signed by him to Audrey Coates, later Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, a noted socialite. With a portrait frontispiece of William Lyon Mackenzie King.Inscribed by him to the recto of front endpaper, dated June 16th 1928 and addressed to Mrs Audrey Coates. From the library at Julians Park, the former home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field). Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII. She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. This speech was given in celebration by Canada of the Sixtieth Anniversary of Confederation. The preface notes 'selections that have been made from among a number of public speeches of which the record has been sufficiently adequate to permit of their publication'. The author also notes 'I have been careful not to include speeches dealing with controversial politics. This of necessity has limited considerably my field of choice'. In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Author's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Very Good. book.
