Biography of the author of "Proverbial Philosophy", a book of poetry or, as Tupper preferred to call them, rhythmics. The book, in its many later editions and versions, brought him fame and wealth, including being considered for the Poet Laureateship, but his later life became far less successful.

From the foreword by Tupper's grandson: "He was not quite the poet laureate that he would have liked to be, and that some would have made him, nor was he the futile foil of Laurence Housman's "Victoria Regina". We have had to wait until now to see him in true perspective. Mr Hudson, his first, and perhaps only, biographer, by dint of patient and thorough research, has shown us Martin Tupper as he was, and, at the same time, has made a notable contribution to the social history of the nineteenth century. It is not to be expected that this biography will call "Proverbial Philosophy" forth from the dusty recesses of Charing Cross Road and set it once more upon the bookshelves of the English-speaking world, for its religious idiom is of an age that is past. But I am deeply indebted to Mr Hudson for rescuing the name of Martin Tupper from obscurity and ignominy, and for introducing him to this generation as one who contributed in some measure to its heritage of faith and freedom."
