'GOUVERNEMENT GENERAL DE L'ISLE DE FRANCE (.)'This print shows a detailed map of France, showing the provinces into which the kingdom was organized up until 1790. The meticulous title cartouche includes the royal crest of France, adorned with the three golden 'Fleurs de lys' and a classical river god. The isle-de-France region has been historically considered as the heartland of France and has been almost continuously a royal domain. Paris is situated in the centre of the map.Made by an anonymous engraver after Frederik de Wit.Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 65 x 53.5 cm (25.59 x 21.06 inch). Image size: 59 x 50 cm. (23.23 x 19.69 inch).MAP-FRANCE-L'ISLE DE FRANCE-PROVINCES-CENTRE OF FRANCE-PARIS | T.39 LARGEBACKGROUND INFORMATIONThis print was published in Amsterdam, ca. 1690.Biography artist: De Wit (1629 ca.-1706) was a mapmaker and mapseller who was born in Gouda but who worked and died in Amsterdam. He moved to the city in 1648, where he opened a printing operation in 1655. From the 1660s onward, he published atlases with a variety of maps; he is best known for these atlases and his Dutch town maps. He gained a privilege from the States General in 1688. After Frederik's death in 1706, his wife Maria ran the shop for four years before selling it. Their son, Franciscus, was a stockfish merchant and had no interest in the map shop. At the auction to liquidate the de Wit stock, most of the plates went to Pieter Mortier, whose firm eventually became Covens & Mortier, one of the biggest cartography houses of the eighteenth century. Condition: good, given age. Fold as published. Creases. Tear in upper centre restored. Paper loss in lower left corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Frederik de Wit (ilustrador).…

Blank on verso.PublisherJean Lattre (fl. 1743 - 1793) was a Paris based bookseller, engraver, and map publisher active in the mid to late 18th century. Lattre published a large corpus of maps, globes, and atlases in conjunction with a number of other important French cartographic figures, including Janvier, Zannoni, Bonne and Delamarche. He is also known to have worked with other European cartographers such as William Faden of London and the Italian cartographer Santini. Map piracy and copyright violations were common in 18th century France. Paris court records indicate that Lattre brought charges against several other period map publishers, including fellow Frenchman Desnos and the Italian map engraver Zannoni, both of whom he accused of copying his work. Lattre's offices and bookshop were located at 20 rue St. Jaques, Paris, France.CartographersRigobert Bonne (1727 - 1794) was one of the most important French cartographers of the late 18th century. Bonne was born in Ardennes at Raucourt, France. He taught himself mathematics and by eighteen was a working engineer. During the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), he served as a military engineer at Berg-op-Zoom. In the subsequent years, Bonne became one of the most respected masters of mathematics, physics and geography in Paris. In 1773, Bonne succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period - most on equal-area projection known erroneously as the 'Bonne Projection'. Bonne's work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th century and early 18th century towards a more scientific and practical aeshetic. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is high regards for its details, historical importance and overall aesthetic appeal. Bonne died of edema in 1794, but his son Charles-Marine Rigobert Bonne continued to publish his work well after his father's death.Jean or Robert Janvier (fl. 1746 - 1776)was a Paris based cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Janvier true first name is a matter of debate, as it appears as it often appears as either Jean or Robert. More commonly, Janvier simply signed his maps Signor Janvier. By the late 18th century Janvier seems to have been awarded the title of Geographe Avec Privilege du Roi and this designations appears on many of his latter maps. Janvier worked with many of the most prominent French, English and Italian map publishers of his day, including Faden, Lattre, Bonne, Santini, Zannoni, Delamarche, and DesnosALL OUR PRINTS AND MAPS ARE ORIGINAL ANTIQUES AND ARE DATED AS STATED IN OUR DESCRIPTION View Our Categories Decorative Prints World Wide Maps Scotland Maps Architecture Design England Maps Royalty About UsWe specialise in selling all items that can be considered to be Antique Paper. * PRINTS * MAPS * HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS * POSTAL HISTORY * BOOKS * POSTERS * STAMPS * POSTCARDS * EPHEMERA And anything else that is considered Antique and made of Paper. Artist or Author: Composite AtlasWork: Frederick De WitDate of Publication: c1688Style: EngravingPaper Size: ~ 21" by 23 1/2" (Fold Out)Condition: The work is in good to very good condition overall. There may be some faint offset to the fold out nature of the plates. There may be some older paper repair to maps from the work. There may be some wear or small separation at folds. There may be minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.Description of the work:This remarkable folio engraving from a composite atlas of maps from Frederick De Wit. It was published in Amsterdam after 1688. De Wit published composite atlases using plate stock of his own and other Amsterdam map publishers. This included maps from the likes of Hondius, Bleau, and Visscher."The De Wit composite or 'dual-purpose' atlas is an early example of an atlas planned at its outset to serve as a land and a sea atlas in one. Koeman lists these works according to the number of maps and by and large this progression gives a fair idea of their development and therefore dates, beginning in the early 1660s. But he acknowledges it is not accurate and often subject to revised opinion. The index is quite unlike any of those listed in Koeman." (Wardington Catalogue)Frederik De Wit (1629-1706) created a leading publishing firm in Amsterdam during the golden age of Dutch cartography. He was a catographer and mapseller that was best known for his atlases and his Dutch town maps. After De Wit's passing his wife, Maria, ran the shop for a few years before selling. At this point, most of his plates went to Pieter Mortier.…
