No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Seale's folding map of Middlesex with the liveries of the Free Companies of London to margins and contained within a marbled slipcase. Undated as usual: a note to the slipcase label suggests a date of around 1767 but with Robert Wilkinson named as one of the publishers, this would suggest a slightly later date of around 1775. Map mounted in 18 sections on linen. No holes or tears. Edges lifting slightly to some panels. The odd very minor spot. Slight fraying to margins. Slipcase heavily worn and with handwritten label to front. Outline colouring to Hundreds. Sheet size: 74.8cm by 52.8cm approx. Overall, a bright copy of this attractive map. Hand coloured engraved map, on 16 sections laid onto linen, in tidy condition, slightly browned at the edges and reverse, 20 x 29 inches, 51 x 64 cms, housed in the original card slipcase with label, rubbed and a little worn, not dated c1760, uncommon Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

No binding. Condición: Very Good. 525 x 725 mm., early outline colour, small tear in upper margin repaired, not effecting the image, light fraying to margin lower right, otherwise in good condition. This is arguably one of the most decorative folio maps of the county of Middlesex. It is lined with the 92 coats of arms of all the Free Companies of London and is headed by the arms of the City of London. It was published in Emanuel Bowen's 'Large English Atlas'. Donald Hodson describes the Large English Atlas as 'by far the most important eighteenth-century English atlas to be published before the appearance of John Cary's New and Correct English atlas in 1787'. Almost without exception the maps were carefully based on the latest surveys available. It is derived from John Warburton's separately published rare two-sheet map of 1749. No doubt itself in drawn from the work of John Rocque and his large survey in 16 sheets published in 1746.Hodson lays out the various states of the map, the first two being proof issues. This is state 6 of 8 which was issued from the c.1767. The engraver Richard Seale dedicates the map to Thomas Holles Pelham, Duke of Newcastle and the Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex and Westminster at the time. Provenance: Clive A.
