Añadir al carritohardcover. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. New York. 1970. September 1970. Random House. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 248 pages. hardcover. Jacket photograph by Derrick Te Paske. keywords: American Literature. DESCRIPTION - Twenty-six and still in conflict with his family, his surroundings, his girl and himself, Walker Hawley moves simply to move, depending upon motion for release, if not discovery. His sports car acts as an extension of this urge to escape. Having written, as an undergraduate, one highly praised short story, Walker has labeled himself 'writer,' trusting this meager title to protect him from the realization that since he has been out of college, he has produced nothing, written or otherwise. Although he is a mixture of seriousness and frivolity, sense and nonsense, he is perceptive enough to know he is in trouble and to be looking for a way out. A large part of the story concerns his trip West in a cozy TR-3 with Lila Caine, who answers, first, his advertisement for a driving companion, and then a few other questions, which Walker was not aware he'd asked. Soon they are spending more time in motels than on the road, but after a series of bizarre adventures and minor disasters, the sexual marathon ends in Mexico, where Walker, minus his car, finally comes to a decision. Michael Mewshaw displays a broad range of talents in leading his characters from experiences of low comedy to an aching recognition of the delusions of youth and freedom. If there are moments of biting satire, the tone remains good-humored, bawdy, even hilarious, as he attempts through laughter to find a way of dealing with what Walker has learned. inventory #8743 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First Edition. In dustjacket. Green fabric with stamped, silver lettering to front cover and spine. Author's first book. "The harrowing, calamitous, funny, touching flight of a guilt-eaten young man--from the rank unweeded garden of an unloving home in wintry Washington to Mexico (even ranker) and back home to find the bluebird. Walter Hawley was raised with the family Murdoch in Cottage City (as ungainly as it sounds). He was the product of his mother Iris' first marriage, and Iris, now in a mental institution, alternately curses and smothers him. His sister cordially hates him and his beloved stepfather, Daddy Dick, has withdrawn into a beery romance with TV football. Walker himself suffers from a paralysis of will brought on by all the calls he had put up with and did not want--God and the Catholic Church, Mother, his nice little girlfriend Dede's desire for marriage, the inner directive to write. But when Daddy Dick, in an alcoholic haze, stumbles to his death, Walker flees into the snowy night in his trusty Tr-3, California-bound with voluptuous Lila as a passenger. By the time the trip is over in Mexico, Walker has effused guilt from every orifice. In fact the motel-dotted journey is a gala performance of intestinal agonies and increasingly distressful couplings with Lila, trailed by a brace of college cut-ups. He returns home--the one narrow path left open--to marry Dede and represent those who measured their lives in terms of things lost. Young beatitudes in a vision of Cottage City--and all of a piece." Very Good in Good dustjacket. Some folding, ripping, and sunning to dustjacket. Sunning to back cover and top edge.
