Although it is sometimes overlooked as being dated it should still be required reading for both soldiers and politicians contemplating interventions in troubled areas of the world. One assertion which remains truly relevant is his argument that too many 'conventional' officers fail, for a variety of reasons, to understand and embrace the basic/fundamental principles of counterinsurgency - whether so-called Classical insurgency or the more recent Interventionist model. Kitson was an officer in the SAS & may have been responsible for dubious activities, possibly war crimes in Northern Ireland; his ideas were also used to terrorise ethnic minorities, especially black Londoners in the 1970s.
