Leather. Condición: Very Good Indeed. A smart revised edition of this collection of periodical papers written by Sir Richard Steele under the pseudonym Marmaduke Myrtle. A new, revised edition of The Lover and The Reader, a collection of 40 periodical essays first published between 1714 to 1715 and in book form in 1715. Bound in… full calf, rebacked with the original spine laid and end papers renewed. The Lover and The Reader with a half title and a single page of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work, as called for. Steele founded The Tatler and The Spectator alongside Joseph Addison. The Lover, edited by Steele under the psuedonym, 'Marmaduke Myrtle, Gent', was published three times a week and ran for forty issues. These essays were framed, in Steele's words, around ' the passion or the affection of love'. The Reader, conversely, was highly political and deeply concerned with the succession crisis, only published in nine issues between April and May. This new edition is bound with Addison's The Whig-Examiner, a short-lived, Tory newspaper produced by Addison. Additionally, an Additional Number of The Lover, an essay on the Character of Sir Richard Steele and A Vindication of Sir Richard Steele, are printed to the rear, with continuous pagination. Bound in full calf. Rebacked with the original spine laid down. Rubbing to the gilt and leather of spine, leather lightly cracking. The odd marks to boards. Front hinge slightly strained, rear hinge starting. Offsetting to front blank from title page engraving. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good Indeed.
